Dietary Specific Homemade Food

Post by Dawnspell »

As most of you know Barney has kidney damage and has to be on specific diet. Rather than prescription diet the vet wanted him to have home prepared food low in protein and phosphorus. There are other dogs on forum Watson, Lottie that get the different types of kidney stones and Woody with suspected pancreatitis.
So I've found any easy way to come up with recipes that can be made to measure for your dog. Theres a brilliant website where you add individual ingredients, quantities etc and it does complete analysis protein, fats, carbs, vits, minerals, calories. You just tweak as you go changing quantities or ingredients until you have the levels the vet recommends.
What is really good is you can save all the recipes and add ingredients that aren't there. I had to add in green tripe cant think why it wasn't there for humans =)) It is American so some foods are named differently, I was looking for courgette and of course its zucchini :))
I've also used it for coming up with ideas of ingredients for treat recipes. I found it about a week ago but have since found it recommended on a dog kidney group so know its tried and tested.
Have a play its good for human diets too :-bd

Thanks for the link. Very useful. For the moment, we have Watson on the Nutriment Low Purine food, but I will look at the homemade food once we have had a few clear scans for bladder stones and the new opening does not close up. I'll look at what Rupert is eating, as he is still on homemade.

I offer my advice freely, but I am not an expert, breeder, groomer or behaviourist. It is simply my experience of raising pups in a way that seems to make sense.

Which link doesn't work? Bear in mind that this post is 7 years old and some of the sites may no longer be working.
