Maggie the Giant
Maggie came to live with us 5 years ago aged 18 months via another member of this forum. Her first 9 months with us became challenging as her excitable behaviour led to friction with another of our dogs.
However, as we reached the point when we thought we had made a mistake re-homing her, she was diagnosed with Lupoid Onychitis and we had to think again about finding her another home as an only dog. With more time her condition came under control and with more work her behaviour moderated.
Over the following years she became a loving cuddle monster with a great sense of fun, and although we could never stop her counter surfing or occasional naughty streak (typical of Giants), and she was never totally forgiven by the dog she had victimised, they tolerated each other and she was a much loved member of the family.
Yesterday afternoon she suddenly became very poorly and we rushed her to our vets. They kept her in overnight with IV fluids and painkillers while they carried out tests, X-rays and ultrasound scans. This morning she got worse and the tests revealed a high level of toxins although the X-rays and scans were inconclusive.
With no clear cause identified, they decided investigative surgery was needed, but were concerned she may be too weak for an anaesthetic. We went to see her and she perked up enough for them to feel the risk was lessened.
When they opened her up they found a large perforated mass adjacent to her stomach, the contents of which which had caused irreparable damage to her digestive system and we agreed they should not wake her up.
We’ll never forget you sweet Maggie.

Re: Maggie the Giant
How sad, but what a good story when it comes to resilience in rehoming and sticking with things, great love comes from such actions
Your memories of Maggie are going to be rich, while she looks down on you

Re: Maggie the Giant
The only good thing is that Maggie didn't have to suffer for long.
I bet you are still in shock but in time you will be able to look back on the many happy memories she has left behind.
