Not really a less serious moment for chit chat but very much a topic on everybodys mind.
Guernsey is not on total lock down but schools, pubs, health centers, events etc are closed or cancelled and social distancing is to be practiced and avoid gatherings of people.
There have been 20 positive cases and some results are still due all of which are people who have brought it to the island. No "seeding" person to person infection yet. Anyone returning to the island has to self isolate for 2 weeks.
Has anyone heard anything about keeping dogs away from other dogs to avoid transmission ? I know the virus can remain active for up to 72 hours on certain surfaces. Could this apply to dog fur ? Just a thought
With us being self employed and receiving mail from household customers we are quarantining the post, may be extreme, I dont know.

Re: Coronavirus. Hows everybody doing ?
There isn't an awful lot of info on dog hair as surface but there has been some info on hair generally. The virus apparently has a greasy surface (? not sure a virus has a surface...) so it has been said that it can reside on human hair and people should wash it often. That makes sense to me. Also I have seen advice that says people should avoid petting strange dogs, same reason. I am socially distancing Otto at the moment, quite easy to do because I live rurally and the many many months of having to avoid dogs means that I am a dab hand at avoiding people with dogs...... sad really because Otto was loving all of the doggy socialisation that he now has. I had heard that the virus can stay on cardboard for 24 hours so I guess it is from the person who last held it before getting to you. Having said that, when I get a parcel delivered, I open it straight away, discard the packaging and then wash my hands. Keep safe..

Re: Coronavirus. Hows everybody doing ?
All well here in our village Not too much has changed really for us and the dogs. We can still walk them - keeping at an appropriate distance from other people - currently anyway. Luckily we do have a very large garden which is more than adequate for exercise and games for our little ones even if the worst came and we were "confined to barracks."
I have read advice that dogs should all be lead walked for now as, if a dog did run up to another dog or run away, it could be a real issue for the owner to get them back. The local dog field for hire is still open for bookings just now - they have removed all toys, agility equipment and taken the lids off poo bins so no need to lift to open them and gates are regularly sanitised. Vet surgeries are emergency or needful treatments only.
We did have a brief scare re the dogs' raw food as some panic buying apparently had taken up all our supplier's stock but this seems to have settled down now and we do have some other possibilities in an emergency. I have been more worried about not being able to get the dogs' food and supplements than our supplies actually
Re keeping dogs from socialising I don't think this is a huge risk of transmission from fur although the recommendation is to always wash your hands after touching your dog/s. We are so tactile and close with our dogs that it really is a non-starter to do this or we would be doing nothing else but wash our hands but we have been keeping our dogs away from contact with other dogs for several weeks so the only risk is within our family in that respect.
There is more comprehensive information here if anyone wants some more clarification:

Re: Coronavirus. Hows everybody doing ?
Guernsey was put into "lockdown" at midnight last night though we are allowed to exercise for up to 2 hours outside per day. This can include walking the dog. No more than 2 people are to be together unless it's a family living under one roof and you must observe a 2m distance. If you can work from home then you must. My employer has ensured that I have access to all the IT systems that I need and so I can work from home. Rosie and Edie have loved having me here
Today the state vet issued guidance on dog walking that basically echoed your arrangements.
You can have your dog off the lead
Do not let your dog socialise with other dogs
Don't pet other family dogs
Don't let others pet your dogs.
Please look after yourselves.

Re: Coronavirus. Hows everybody doing ?
Ive not been out since tues other than dog walks. I took my son to work this morning he works part time in waitrose and I don't want him going on the bus. The island was eerily quiet. Normally on the coast on weekend morning there's loads of cyclists, joggers, people outwalking. I think I saw 3 cyclist, 3 joggers, couple of dog walkers.
The busiest place was supermarket people queuing outside 2m apart waiting for one to come out before one is let in.

Re: Coronavirus. Hows everybody doing ?
My Mother in law lives in assisted care complex and visitors haven't been allowed since beginning of March. Yesterday was the first day anyone was allowed visitors. Who did she want to see first ? Her daughter, son, grandchildren, great grandchildren ? No it was Jasper Of course she got to see her son too but it was cheeky chappy Jasper that made her day. He was pleased to see his Gran again too
