Treats for raw fed puppies

Post by ohsosky »

Hi all :) I have had my puppy Chepe for two weeks now! I recently posted before I collected him about kibble but after getting him and doing some more research now I have some time off work I think I want to move him to a raw food diet. I’m leaning towards Poppy’s picnic, it looks convenient to be honest as I don’t think I could prepare it all myself but also has some really nice reviews.

I currently split up Chepes kibble into 3 portions and do some training for each meal with this rather than giving him treats. How would I go about this if I went to raw feeding? Does anybody have experience of this?? He is very greedy so I am worried about over feeding him :-s He really likes cheese and would do anything for it I believe :)) but I think this is too fatty for regular training!

Any advice would me much appreciated! Here is a photo of my boy :) I’m still deciding if I am going to clip or hand strip him but it is all very complicated !! :-\

Chepe is very cute - lovely photo :o3

We feed our dogs and puppies on raw food and use a variety of different training treats. We do include some very small puppy kibble from Simpsons 80/20 range:

https://www.simpsonspremium.com/dogs/pu ... sh-chicken

We do also use cheese but cut into really tiny pieces and not all the time as well as tiny pieces of cooked chicken. If cheese is the absolute favourite, keep this for a ‘high value’ treat only and use the other treats for general training. You can also use tiny pieces of cooked liver which is often a favourite with ours or chopped cooked beef.

The main thing is to make sure the treats are very tiny and, if you think you are still using a lot in the day, reduce the meal amount by a little. However, the nutrients for growing puppies are in their regular food so it is best not to reduce this if you can. Puppies while growing can cope with some extra calories as long as they are not simply from food that is high in sugars or highly processed fat so don’t worry too much. Schnauzers in my experience are always greedy as adults too but raw feeding will help to keep Chepe fit and less likely to become overweight as the raw meals contain fewer ‘empty’ calories from carbohydrates/sugars.

There are freeze dried raw treats available I think theyre natures menu. JR pate are just meat. You can get loads out of one of the tiny packs they cut up into lovely small pieces and hold together well. You can also dehydrate any meat and cut it into tiny pieces.

I use ziwi peak as treats its a complete air dried food that a lot of raw feeders use alongside feeding raw. Its expensive but still works out cheaper than buying the little bags of dog treats and its a balanced daily food not a treat. Its the only food I've found to be of high enough value to use as a treat with a picky eater. The squares can be cut into smaller pieces too so it goes even further.

Alison, is there a local stockist or do you buy from their UK website?

The ziwi peak ? I tried over here but no luck. I bought from Amazon it worked out cheaper than their website, but I think price has gone up a bit on Amazon now so not sure which is cheapest.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I will keep the cheese for high value (also discovered he loves cucumber even more than cheese !! who would have thought..) :)

I’ve actually got some of that jr pate in the cupboard but not used it. I’ll get some more of that too if he likes! I’ve picked up some air dried treats too. They are a bit big so I am going to cut them into tiny pieces

I’ve just placed my order for some raw food today so hopefully he takes to it !! Chepe is my first dog so hopefully I am doing some things right :-s :D
