Undigested lentils

Post by Oscar 12345 »

I have very recently changed Otto's food. This one has lentils in it as part of the veggie content. In most of his poops the lentils come out as they went in which means he is not digesting them at all. It is early days with this new food but should I be concerned?

Dogs do have a shorter digestive tract than humans so some foods such as lentils may not be broken down and absorbed as well as meat or fish would be, for example. Some dogs may become used to this kind of food but others may never be able to fully digest lentils and they will come out as they went in - sweetcorn is another example of this. If the poops are fine apart from the fact that they contain the lentils I would not worry but it may mean that Otto is not getting much nutritional benefit from them in the meal.

Thanks Leigh, he has only just transitioned so poop is softer than normal. Hopefully in another week his system will have got used to it. I have written to the Company also to see whether it is a common problem.

No experience of lentils Julie. Rosie's only ever offered quinoa :D

We can't have that until I have properly learnt how to pronounce it. :)
