Homemade Diet Plan
Hi everyone, we’re new here and this is our first post, we have a 5 month old Miniature Schnauzer called Travis , over the last couple of weeks he’s been going off his food, (we’ve been using tails.com), some days he will only eat one meal! He’s meant to eat three. We’ve had him at the vets and there is nothing obviously wrong with him, he’s healthy and gets his daily exercise etc..., when we tried feeding him chicken and rice he wolfs it down quicker than you can blink lol.... so we’ve come to the conclusion, (vet included), that he simply just doesn’t like his food. I’ve been looking all morning at homemade dog recipes and I’m thinking of making his food for him from now on, I’m thinking once a week I can spend the afternoon in the kitchen and portion his daily meals for the week, it seems very doable and also is good to know what exactly he’s eating, the only thing I’m struggling with is figuring out portion sizes and exactly how to balance his meals so he’s getting all the nutrients he needs, so my question is... does anybody else give their dog a homemade diet? Does anybody have a diet plan worked out that ensures they are getting all the nutrients they need?, any help with this would be much appreciated and we’re looking forward to getting more involved in this forum as Travis grows up

Re: Homemade Diet Plan
Welcome to the Forum
Great news that you are planning on feeding Travis a home prepared diet and I am sure that he will benefit from it. We feed our dogs a raw diet (and have done for almost 12 years now) and they thrive on it. As we have 11 dogs and I am vegetarian, we have found it easier to use prepared raw meals from a raw dog food company but DIY raw is quite possible. If you want to cook the food, the ingredients will be very similar - 80-90% meat and 10% offal with some cooked blended vegetables /mushy rice if you want to add these. Oily fish or fish oil can be a useful supplement too.
There are some links here to raw feeding guides but, as the essential nutrients will be the same more or less, it may give you some guidance if you do still want to cook the food. Just remember that dogs must not have cooked bone so, if you are cooking the food, you will need to provide calcium from another source.

Re: Homemade Diet Plan
Kevin and Travis, welcome to the forum. A few of the complete raw food companies do sell a range of supplements that go in to their food for people who would rather diy the raw content. Here is one example from the company I use. https://www.cotswoldraw.com/herbal-supp ... -Blend-1kg
