Barf Food Lists

BARF refers to Biologically Appropriate Raw food or Bones and Raw Food. It is where owners have decided to feed their Schnauzer a natural diet of raw meat, bones, and organs. If you are considering this for your Schnauzer, you will find lots of handy tips here.

Those pigs trotters would have been for human consumption. And would have been dealt with in a registered slaughter house. So they will be safe.

Rupert enjoys a pigs trotter and Watson will bury his. I don't feed them trotters any more as I think they are too fatty. The same with pigs ears. Too fatty for a mini.

I offer my advice freely, but I am not an expert, breeder, groomer or behaviourist. It is simply my experience of raising pups in a way that seems to make sense.

Theres a risk of intestinal roundworm for both humans and dogs eating raw or undercooked pork worldwide. However British pork is considered to be one of the safest. I only buy British and make sure its frozen for minimum of 3 weeks before feeding it raw as if there happens to be the parasite present that will kill it.

Thank you Bee Bee, the pork I give Jessie is from the supermarket. I know what you mean about watching waistlines, Jessie got weighed today and she is 10.4 kgs!!
Think i will only feed it occasionally, although it is her favourite. :-bd

I know this post is quite old, but I’m wondering if anyone has the information as the links are now broken (404). I’m considering BARF for Rocky who is nearly 18 weeks old now and has lost his lower front teeth and is not happy with his kibble. Any advice and encouragement is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Lauren, I would definitely recommend raw feeding. We have fed our dogs this way for 14 years now and wouldn’t choose to change as they are so fit and healthy on this diet.

I am assuming you are in the USA so not sure of any specific recommendations re prepared raw food suppliers but there are a few links here with some general information re raw feeding:

http://www.rawfeedingrebels.com/raw-fee ... ter-guide/

https://www.wolftucker.co.uk/wolftucker ... ing-guide/

http://holisticvet.co.uk/index.php/holi ... tion-tips/

https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/r ... ng-primer/

Some of these are helpful if you want to DIY raw feeding but there are many small specialist raw food for dogs businesses in the U.K. and maybe also the US who produce meat only or meat and veg meals prepared and frozen which can make the process easier when you first start out on this way of feeding as they are usually prepared to be nutritionally balanced which takes some of the worry away about being sure you are providing all the necessary nutrients especially for a puppy. There should be no need to feed a puppy any different food though than an adult as long as it is minced down fine enough for them to eat.

Thanks for the links I will review them. Yes, I am in the USA. The idea of raw feeding makes sense to me and it is somewhat inline with how we eat in my home, meaning, I prepare and cook nearly all our food and rarely buy processed foods. Thanks, again!
