Andrea, I would try this. I think it should work well because Cookie's coat is quite curly. Just comb it through coat regularly and it should be removing dead hair and make for a better coat. Make sure the coat has no knots in it because that will pull and hurt. The photo you sent is really interesting with the colour being so different around the rear. yes she does licking herself all the times. I got her dog shirt stop her for licking everywhere.

That licking is definitely causing the discolouring on her rear so I would try and determine the cause of the licking. The coat rake will definitely help in removing the dead hair. If you want to share what you are feeding and any other info regarding the irritation/licking there are people on the forum who might be able to help.

Every since I got Cookie four months ago she would scratch her self all the time and licking too. I feed her purina chicken kibble and cesar wet food. I took her to Vet back in May I told the doctor the problem my dog is having and she also have alot bump on her back. The lady told me at pet store change my dog diet to Farmina Ocean it will help skin stop itching.

I think she could be having an allergic reaction to her diet, maybe the chicken. Have you tried changing the diet?

Licking will definitely stain the coat and, as Julie said a change of food could help. I prefer to raw feed our dogs but whatever type of food you choose should be high in quality protein meat or fish and preferably no cereal grains and low percentage of legumes (e.g, peas / lentils ). Many dog foods claim to be chicken / fish / beef but the actual amount in the food is very small and the food is mostly cheap fillers such as corn, grains, potato etc.

Check the ingredients list of the food and look for those with 75% or more actual meat / fish and less than 30% vegetables and no grains. The less processed the food and the higher the quality of ingredients the less likely it is to cause health issues including skin problems. Dry kibble is highly processed which destroys the natural nutrients and these are then added back in which means the ingredients may be very poor quality.

There can be other reasons for a dog to be itching from parasites to reactions to environmental toxins or as a reaction to spot on flea treatments so it might be worth trying to find a vet who will take a look at Cookie and assess what may be the actual cause in her case.

I am thinking about givie Cookie Hills Skin & Food Sensitivities to see it will stop her for itching and licking.

I would just look at the highest quality foods rather than big brand names which although often sold or promoted in vet surgeries do not contain the best ingredients. From an online search this seems to be the ingredient list of two of he Hills Food sensitivities range, both of which have low quality brewers rice as half or more of the content plus unspecified ‘animal fat’.

Ingredients (Dry): Salmon & Rice: Brewers' rice (51%), salmon (34%) meal, animal fat, digest, soybean oil, minerals, cellulose, L-lysine, fish oil, vitamins, trace elements, taurine, L-tryptophan and beta-carotene. With natural antioxidant (mixed tocopherols).

Ingredients (Dry): Duck and Rice: Brewers' rice (50%), duck (37%) meal, animal fat, digest, soybean oil, minerals, cellulose, fish oil, L-lysine, vitamins, taurine, trace elements, L-tryptophan and beta-carotene. With natural antioxidant (mixed tocopherols).

If you check these links you will see that a number of poor quality ingredients are added to many dry dog foods and you really need to find a food that lists named meat or fish as the main ingredient (70% plus) and vegetables with little or no grain. Brown rice in very small quantities may be acceptable but brewers rice is generally regarded as the lowest quality rice.

I know it is hard to interpret many ingredient lists on dog food especially the dry food but, if you have a good pet store, try to have a browse of the ingredient lists on the packs and look for those with the least number of added substances but the best quality. Cookie may have an allergy to a particular protein but she may just be reacting to the additives / poor quality of one or more of the ingredients in her current food.

Just to add to Leigh's post, my advice would be to keep the diet as simple and "fresh" as possible. I note in the Hill's ingredient list in includes taurine and they add that because there is insufficient quantity of good quality protein. The allaboutdogfood website is really useful to point you in the right direction regarding nutritional ratings. I would shortlist some and research how good they are from a skin condition point of view and/ or ask people on the forum whether they would recommend it.

On the U.S. Dog food equivalent of all about dog food it's rated 4 stars out of 5. Personally I would look at the 5 star rated foods. I don't like the sound of chicken and Turkey meal, sounds lower quality type meat.

Hello. I don't know if you can get it there, but freeze dried raw dog food is very convenient and healthy. I use a brand called Primal. Also, many dogs here born in the last 10 years have been allergic to chicken. My dog loves the Primal Turkey and Sardine. But I agree with the others, I think your dog is allergic to something. My mini schnauzer Cookie is doing much better she is on medication for her allergies. Thank to every one of you tried to help.

I changed my dog food to Nulo grain free I noticed her coat is returning back to normal color.
