I wouldn't worry about the ears. I think Barney was around 6 months before I shaved them, just kept trimming the edges a bit.

Are you going to try stripping the top of her head or shaving? It took ages for any wire to come on the head from the eyebrows up towardş the ears. He's now a bit of a hybrid. I rake it, strip a few out and shave so it's a right mix up

Edie seems to tolerate the head tugs better than Rosie does so I'll try and strip it. I can always fall back on clipping the head if all else fails.

Edie continues to be carded a couple of times a week and her P&S wire coat is coming through below the puppy coat. In parts, her puppy coat is coming off with the undercoat and she is beginning to look really scruffy in parts. Someone stopped me in the street and was really surprised that Rosie and Edie were the same breed. He said that Edie looks like she's been dragged through a hedge backwards. I thought that was a little harsh :)

Here's a pic of the back of her neck - I'm pulling the puppy coat aside

Sam, lol, it's surely the ugly duckling scenario and the swan will be revealed in due course. I did find that even when pups body/jacket is looking a little bit shall we say "not at it's best" a tidy face/ears/furnishings etc. will carry you through the hedge backwards stage. I can't remember whether you are clipping Edie's head but I clipped ears/cheeks, head, bottom, trimmed paws etc. within a few weeks of getting Otto so that he looked reasonably smart. I did get worried though when he was teething and his ears went all over the place and I worried about whether I should have kept the weight on his ears. All was ok though and they eventually landed in the right place. Yes, I agree a bit harsh for Edie. I can definitely see the wire showing on that photo.

That's looking good. Can't really tell from photo is the wire looking as though she's going to stay dark?

I'm not convinced that she will :(

Just finished my Saturday grooming. Rosie's had her card and strip, Edie has had a tidy up on the ears, butt and skirt and has also been carded. Here's how she's looking now.

I got round to using a proper camera rather than my iPhone. The wire is very evident now on her neck and I can see it on her jacket if I pull the puppy coat to the side. It looks like she may be as pale as Rosie or possibly even paler which is a real surprise as she was so black - still is almost everywhere. She's looking a little moth eaten, poor girl, but the swan will return :)

That's amazing. Someone once posted a picture of a giant pepper and salt that did the same.

Maybe she's going to have the head of a P&S and the body of a black and silver? :-o

So it's a month further on, I continue to card her twice a week and roll her coat every weekend. She is a real little ugly duckling and I can't wait for the swan to appear. I call her my changeling. Sometime in the future her black puppy coat will become a beautiful P&S wire coat but at this rate she's going to see her first birthday as a mongrel :)

You can see it coming in though. Her fur looks quite long you could maybe take a bit more out when you're rolling or you could roll her coat more frequently. I have the same problem with Barney his coat grows really quick. If I do him weekly his coat stays at around 1.5 inch. I can get it shorter if I take more out but his coat doesn't look as full on his sides as he doesn't have any undercoat there. I tend to do him every 5 days that keeps him between 1 and 1.5 inch.

Is a lot of baby coat coming out when you card?

Hi Alison,

Edie's baby coat is well rooted! None of it comes out when I card, only when I strip. She too has very little undercoat on her sides. I'm happy with how she looks as soon as I've rolled but within a couple of days it looks overgrown. I'd never considered going to a 5 day interval for the roll and will give that a go.

She's beginning to lose her puppy looks; the skinny cylinder is filling out in the chest and shoulders and just this week her adult teeth began to come in.

She is really good about being stripped and tolerates her head and upper legs being pulled too so I think the only area that I'll have to clip is her butt and her inner ear as I can strip the outer ear with no objection.

Hi Sam

I would consider the longer hairs more regularly. When Otto was younger I used to regularly pull the longer hairs, daily actually. Not a big ritual and only for a few minutes at a time when he was on the table being brushed or when he is lying on the carpet next to me. Now I do it weekly although I am well behind because of his illness. It seems to be between 1-1.5 inches and I can't get it less than that without pulling hair that doesn't want to come out, it does look smart even at the 1.5in because there is no wave in it at all and it is thick. He used to have tons of soft puppy coat and still has some as his coat suits having some undercoat. Edie's coat is really coming on, you probably aren't noticing it because you see it every day and of course she hasn't even got her adult coat yet.
