Beard stain...
Hi,
I have noticed that Sasha's beard is quite brown, I only really noticed when I saw pictures of other black and silver Schnauzers and could see how white/silver their beards were, here are some recent pics of Sasha:
Any ideas on how to turn it back to white/silver? I saw another post where someone mentioned red meat as a potential cause of staining but Sasha is rarely fed this, generally they have chicken as a treat. She goes to the groomers every 6 weeks and she is also bathed in between grooming trips if dirty/muddy.
Funnily enough after re-reading my post, I checked out a picture of Sasha as a puppy and it looks like the colour is not much different then, to now. Maybe it always had a brown tinge to it.....here she is at 8 weeks old:
Thanks in advance
Mike

Re: Beard stain...
Have attached two photos of my last girl (RIP) April 2017. I gave her charcoal biscuits 2-3 a day & a daily teaspoon of probiotic yogurt it soon made a difficult to her beard as you will see from the before & after photos. I now have a 18mth old boy who is now having the same to keep his beard as white as I can. It's does take time. She never had her beard trimmed.

Oh my word, what two absolutely gorgeous looking Schnauzers and what a transformation with Suzi, with the before and after pics - I'm sold!
I will be looking for some charcoal biscuits now on Amazon, any chance you could tell me which ones you use??
Thanks so much

Re: Beard stain...
Hi Mike,
There was a litter of black and silvers on Guernsey about a year ago and all have beautiful white beards. I'm told that it's achieved by giving the dogs nothing but bottled water to drink.
It's something to do with their saliva; Rosie's been licking at her front right paw the past week or so and the hair has turned red/brown! She has a similar tinge to her beard.
I've never bothered with the bottled water - maybe I should

Re: Beard stain...
Such a intriguing issue and quite perplexing for me for 16 years...... I have always used filtered fridge water in Otto's bowl and I don't think that makes any difference personally. I have just started using the filtered water to wipe his beard though as I was using tap water, I don't think it will help but who knows. What does make a difference is cleaning teeth regularly and particularly around the gums. Wet food isn't good for keeping the stain away. My sister's schnauzer was fed kibble, had great teeth with no tartar and had the most beautiful white beard all of his life. I think Christine feeds Gino biscuit/kibble so that will be helping also as it soaks up the saliva and keeps tartar at bay. My Oscar had awful teeth and had to have lots of teeth out and when the front pointy ones had to be removed when he was very old his beard became a bright white. If you look at the pointy ones you can see where the staining is worse from that part of the gums. The worst thing is to comb/brush a beard that already has saliva on it. This very quickly spreads the stain around the beard so only comb/brush a clean beard. Otto's beard looks different colours at different times. Sometimes it only looks to have a light cream tinge to it and other times is looks more gingery, sort of depends on the light possibly?? Also Otto always seems to have a line where the stain starts half way down the back of the beard which I think means that dragging his beard through other dog's urine might be discolouring it.... (yuck) I am really pleased that he doesn't lick his feet at all and if he did that would make me think that something in his food was causing that. Otto does have a charcoal biscuit each day but only half a full biscuit and also has a teaspoon of yoghurt but it doesn't make much difference. I do think it will get better as he gets older.

Re: Beard stain...
Mike, forgot one very important thing. I feed Otto's wet food by hand so that he doesn't dunk his beard in it. That really helps.

Re: Beard stain...
Agree totally with the bottled or soft water area water. We split our time between UK and S France. Since a pup Dorothy only has bottled water here in the UK and tap in France which is really soft water, Dorothy is 6 and has a beautiful white beard

Re: Beard stain...
Thanks Mike & Julie.
Susan …...Gosh Dorothy is a beauty with her lovely white beard.
As Julie said I do feed Gino on dried Kibble, he's on Burns as was my last girl. I was also told it was their Saliva, & was told about the charcoal biscuits & the probiotic yoghurt. It doesn't change overnight, it did take a long time with Suzi but it did work as I have before & after photos, I have better ones so must look for them & post.
As for the charcoal biscuits I don't have a brand name, either buy from my local pet shop or from Pets at home.
It will be interesting to see over time if Gino's beard does go brown like Suzi's but I hope not hence I have him on the biscuits as the charcoal is good for the digestion.
Thanks everyone

Re: Beard stain...
Dorothy is fed on Lily’s Kitchen, she has the dried food or sometimes their breakfast cereal in the morning and their tin food in the evening (she has all their different flavours).

Re: Beard stain...
I am not getting into a competition with either Susan or Christine, I am convinced you must be using Daz lol. Wonderful beards. I don't think Otto's is too bad. It hasn't been shampooed for just under a week but this is about as good as I can get it without a shampoo. He is such a messy little thing sticking his nose and beard absolutely everywhere. I think it is in the genes. Otto's Mum had a brown beard.
