Best type collar to prevent coat breaking?

Grooming is an important part of looking after your Schnauzer. Regular grooming will help keep your Schnauzer healthy and comfortable and you will spot potential problems early. Whether you decide to clip or strip your Schnauzer, help is on hand. Schnauzers are generally a non-shedding breed and will require a fair amount of grooming to get rid of dead hair.

Best type collar to prevent coat breaking?

Post by Monika »

Hello, not sure where best to place this post and hoping for advice. I have a black mini pup not quite 5 months. I’m wanting to try showing her once old enough and question is around what collars you use for those if you that show as she’s got a puppy synthetic material collar but it’s marking her coat on her neck creating a dent and breaking the fur. She wears it through the day only as her clothes come off at night 😆

Would a rolled soft leather collar be better?
Thanks

Hi Monika and welcome to the Forum :)

We have used fabric collars for all our puppies / dogs and we have and do show a number of them. However we do not leave the collar on through the day, it is only used when they are being taken out for walks or to a park. I am not sure whether any collar that is fastened securely will not have some effect on the fur but others may be able to offer advice from experience.

Hi Monika welcome to the forum. I don't show Otto but I had the exact same problem in fact what seemed to happen was there was a kink in the fur and the undercoat became really fuzzy under the collar and was difficult to pull, it looked very untidy. Once I changed to a harness for walks and no collar Otto's neck hair started to lay normal. His tags are on his harness.

we also need a schnauzer.

Thank you both. I walk her in a Julius K9 harness so will try keeping her collar off unless she’s out 😊
