So funny how they are all so different! Ozzy is more like Barney I think. I can roll him on his back with his paws as well, I can 'sweep' the floor with him on his back shifting him from side to side lol. He's gonna be one of those dogs you can do anything to haha!

Lol

I do love the bond that is created through grooming. It's so relaxing, I love it and he seems to enjoy as well. My little boy :)

I have one quick question. It seems he gets some dandruff or something in the areas I strip the next day. Is that normal?

Barney was funny he would let me do anything to him like that but I only ever saw him lay on his back twice in his life in submissive type posture and never wriggled on his back and I never managed to teach him roll over. He just point blank refused :)) Whereas Jasper rolls like a cartwheel and is always wriggling on his back in play full manner in the middle of the floor.

Cant help with the dandruff, it doesnt show in white fur but I've never noticed any on my clothes.

Kat, yes quite normal, that's the dead skin that comes away with pulled hair. That's what makes the process healthy for the dog's coat and stops the blocked follicles that many clipped schnauzers get. A quick blow with the hair dryer whilst brushing gets rid of it.

Hahaha! Ozzy sounds like Jasper in that respect! He greets us with an army crawl or flips on his back from Day 1 :) He is quite crazy I have to say, he used to jump and flop down on his side but luckily he has stopped that lol. My Chelsea refused to roll over as well! She didn't like being totally on her back, but loved side belly rubs. Did Jasper ever calm down with his cartwheels? I don't mind at all, it's super cute, but I wondering if it was a puppy thing that I don't remember. I think Ozzy is more wild than both my previous minis combined! But Snoop was named Snoop cuz he was super chill, so Chelsea would have to make up a lot of that. Anyway, he's a bit crazy haha :P

Ok thanks, that's super helpful, glad it's normal :)

I'm super excited about hand stripping! How am I doing so far? The pics aren't that great, but can you tell anything?

I started at the head and neck, a little of the ears, worked over the shoulders, down the right side and at the tail and hind legs a bit.

Am I supposed to strip the longest hairs? Makes sense to me that that would keep new hairs growing in and at a length I want to? I also remove some undercoat by carding, right? The breeder said she strips to the skin and there's a chart or something and has to be done in stages. First thing she asks is how I am learning to strip and if i've ever done it before. Lastly she recommended a local-ish groomer who hand strips. I already asked her about stripping and she told me she had no time to show me. She tried to get me to keep him on Royal Canin as well and sent a RC departure pack with coupons and stuff with him. I just feel she tries to intimidate me, or am I over-reacting?

Also I already trimmed in between his eyes at his nose bridge...oops! Don't know if that's a big deal. Not going for a show dog look for the face, but I read you should let it grow out? I will let it grow out now. I didn't trim off much.

Jaspers breeder fed Royal Canin and wanted all the pups to remain on it until at least 6 months. The breeders get some kind of deal to promote. I got a departure pack with voucher for 3 x 5kg bags I think it was and some toys. I got them all for free and gave them to the local animal shelter.

The stripping to the skin is called stage stripping and is mainly done on pups so they have a coat ready for showing at around 6 months, or its done if the wire isnt coming in very well to give it a jump start. Thet end up looking a bit like mexican hairless dogs :)) Then the coat is rolled as it grows back in, which is what you are trying to do. I've only ever heard of it being done in the show world not on pets. Yes, keep on just pulling the longer hairs, you can tell its making a difference on that last photo.

I trim the diamond in between the eyes with thinning shears but NEVER down the nose (dont know if that's what you mean). With black and silver if you shave down the nose you wont get the black mask growing over the white beard if its shaved.

Yes in-between the eyes at the top of nose bridge is where you keep the hair clean from the eyes, not any lower as Alison says. I can see a real difference where you have done the right side. Looks like you are doing a great job, just a little at a time. His coat looks beautiful and ideal for stripping with that thick wave in it. Here's a shot of Otto's head, he hasn't been stripped/clipped for a few weeks, I normally let it grow longer over the Winter. I clip the ears and top of head. His hair was too soft to strip and the colour stays well.

On food, you should feed the best that you are able to. Just tell the breeder that he is doing really well on whatever it is you have changed to, she won't ask you again.

Thanks ladies once more! Ok phew, I only trimmed some at the top of his nose in between his eyes because the hairs were blocking them and I like to look at his eyes (he doesn't mind, he's used to it now and gazes right back into my eyes haha). Actually Allison, maybe I went a little too far down, but one time isn't so bad right? Hard to tell when their schnauze (nose) is so stubby as a puppy 😋 I really don't know. I'm hoping I can still grow it out and it stays black like Otto's hair.

Btw Julie, how old is Otto? I love his markings 😍 Ozzy's eyebrows are still quite dark silver and beard is still very dark except his white goatie 😂. But after I trimmed his cheeks a bit, the silver is really coming through. When you say Otto's hair was too soft on his ears and head, what do you mean? I'm confused because Ozzy's hair is all pretty soft so far, but maybe that's puppy fur? I ended up stripping his head and some of ears. But I stopped doing his ears and just the top scraggly hairs because I didn't want to influence how his ears set. Idk? But how do I know if it's too soft to strip?

I really needed that encouragement ladies, very appreciated! Honestly all I have to go by is you two :)

I'm not a big fan of the breeder, I even questioned myself whether she was a puppy farmer once we picked him up. A lot of red flags. I originally asked her about hand stripping and she told me she had no time to show me. Then rips me when I try to learn myself.....(with your help)

A little background of interested:
1st off, she reserved the wrong puppy. 1st breeder and litter didn't work out, and we were forwarded to her co- breeder (Ozzy's breeder) because she was expecting a couple more litters this year. Something in the communication got mixed and Ozzy's breeder reserved the wrong pup. We only found out 3 weeks later when she sent a pic. When I asked about it and we realized the mix up, I thought we had missed out again and with all the waiting lists I thought it might be 2021 before we get a pup. But then the breeder told me the was a B/S pup that was born 3 weeks later where the OG owners had to cancel. And a male like we requested. HUH? That seemed too good to be true, I was skeptical. She sent a pic of the B/S pup (Ozzy) 4 weeks later, my OH was thinking he also might be pure black (which wasn't a huge deal) but she had said he was B/S. I called her to ask if he was indeed B/S and what colour his paws were since we only had a pic of the top of his head. She was pretty rude and obvious she didn't like me much, but hard to read ppl over the internet and phone, so I just left it and didn't bug waiting for her to let us know when to pick him up. I waited another 3 weeks and decided to just touch base by email. She got back to me and said he goes for his shots the next day and she'll call me when they get back. By now, he was almost 7 weeks and I didn't expect to pick him up until he was at least 8 weeks. But she was almost insistent he was ready to go and said the vet said so. The breeder was cross-province and we were worried about a border closing again due to Covid, so we went and picked him up the next day at 7 weeks and 1 day. He was so young, so tiny, but luckily I think it all worked out somehow. Just saying it seemed to be a very young age to come home, his teeth were just coming in and still softening his kibble. I have no idea if this is common practice, but if we weren't familiar with dogs and schnauzers, I think he was too young.

We got to the breeder's house in the country and she had sheds and shelters built outside the house. There were dogs barking their heads off when we got out the car, but she told us she has 6 adult schnauzers so I guess they could make a racket lol! We entered the house and sat at the table in the kitchen straight ahead the entrance. There were two crates that I could see with schnauzers in it. So I guess the other 4 were outside baking? Or there were a lot of dogs that we couldn't see. She brought the pup to us. I never saw his siblings, don't know anything about them, saw his mum cuz she was on the site as a show dog and no pic of the sire. It just felt very secretive and weird.

We had to make a deposit to get on list and we're not able to visit Ozzy due to Covid. The whole thing seemed so sketchy, but at the same time, Covid times are nothing normal, so I went with it.

Yes, I figured they have a discount with RC. She told me I better keep him on RC or he'll get diarrhea. She said that. She said she feeds RC for years and years (she's 80YO and breeding schnauzers for 40 years) and it's good stuff. I changed him over to Acana anyway, transitioned him and there was 0 issues. In fact his stool was firmer and darker once fed Acana.

But thanks so much for the commendations, I was feeling pretty defeated and like I was doing it all wrong and intimidated. But now I know she's just stuck in the show ring world. She knows I'm not showing him and we have a clause to have him neutered so I have no idea what she is talking about.

Thanks, more of a vent, but any comments are welcome

Sounds a bit like she's taking advantage of covid situation like many back yard "greeders" over here. Schnauzer puppy prices have tripled since we got Jasper last year all because of covid.

Don't worry about getting bits wrong or chopping too much much off, it grows back and Ozzy won't care in the slightest. Barney was forever having one eyebrow longer than the other as he used to raise one just as I cut =)) Jasper on the other hand always seems to have one ear trimmed smaller than the other as he's a fidget. They both had bald bums or cheeks because I've forgotten to change the setting or not put guard on the clippers after shaving their bellies on shortest setting =))

I think I would have had far more grooming disasters if I'd clipped rather than stripping :))
