RIP Darling Alfie
I am completely gutted to be writing this, but yesterday evening we had to make the heart-rending decision to put Alfie to sleep.
A few weeks ago, he was the picture of health, but a stomach bug that affected all 3 dogs escalated and Alfie's underlying Diabetes caused complications. He'd been intensively cared for at the vets for the past 10 days. During that time, we've had some cause for hope, but in the end, little Alf couldn't fight any more and just got tired. The whole vet and nurse team were rooting for him, but it just wasn't to be. I cuddled him on my lap and it was very peaceful.
As those of you who have been through this know, we feel as if a piece of our hearts has been ripped out, although we know we did the kindest thing for Alfie, and it will take time for this pain to ease.
We only had Alfie for just under 4 years after re-homing him via Dogs Trust with his brother, Duke - next week would have been his Gotcha anniversary. We think he was about 9 and in the past 2 years, he's had to cope with Diabetes, Double Cataract surgery, a detached retina, Glaucoma, losing an eye and now this. Hardly seems fair. Yet, at least while he's been with us, he has had a very happy life. He was so brave and just carried on through all of the above. He was an independent spirit, who gave us some scary turns with some of his antics, but equally he gave us his love and trust and his favourite thing was to be upside down on my lap or pushing his face up into ours for a kiss.
Fortunately, in some ways, we re-homed Wilma six weeks ago and she & Duke have formed a close bond. Otherwise, I'm sure Duke would have been bereft too as they always did things together. Nevertheless, we will all miss him in our own way.
My very special boy.
Always remembered xxx

Oh no..............I'm really sorry to hear this. Many of us have been where you are now and it is just the worst possible place.
The pain gets a little easier with time but make sure you cherish the memories.

Re: RIP Darling Alfie
Oh Alison, I am so so sorry, my heart goes out to you and your family. Words cannot explain the pain losing one of our fur babies causes, I am in tears as I type this now. I cannot say anymore than you look after yourselves and Duke and Wilma, it is so tough, Xmas will be so difficult for you, it was for me last year and what with losing my husband in June I am dreading it. RIP little Alfie, run free with all our lovely furry friends in dog heaven.

Re: RIP Darling Alfie
Sorry to read your post about your dear Alfie, it's an awful decision to have to make but also the right one but still doesn't make it any easier and one I hope we do not have to deal with for many many years.
A close friend of ours had to make the decision last Saturday with her dear Westie "Mac" he was 14 in November but had been diabetic for a couple of years (as well as arthritic and the usual Westie skin problems) everything was extremely well managed and the diabetes was under control but things were just getting bad for him and they like you knew the time had come xxx
