Oscar's gone

Saying goodbye to our Schnauzers is the hardest part. Share your memories here as we bid farewell to our beloved friends. They've crossed the bridge and returned to the meadow in full health and free of injuries. Running free. We won't forget.

Oscar's gone

Post by oscarsmate »

I haven't been on here for a while, reading the stories in Rainbow Bridge always made me cry.

I knew this day would come but we had to have Oscar put to sleep this afternoon. We're both devastated.

B 28/12/08 d 27/8/19 run free little man you certainly were huge in our lives. We are still in shock from having a apparently healthy dog passing away within a week.

He'd always had problems, diagnosed with epilepsy at 9 months and then pancreatitis at about 6. But the conditions were managed, and he led an active life going everywhere with us. Cornwall, Devon, Wales, Cumbria, Sussex and Yorkshire stand out.

A further problem arose in February this year when he had blotches on his skin which was diagnosed as an auto immune problem destroying platelets in his blood.

This was treated by large doses of steroids and a shot of chemo therapy which worked, he was signed off as cured only last wednesday.

Over the last few months we had noticed that he was becoming increasingly reluctant to walk any distance, which we put down to the side effect of the steroids.

Then on Saturday we noticed he was having difficulty rolling over on the bed so we bodged in to the vets. They thought it was a reoccurrence of pancreatitis and treated accordingly. He struggled through saturday night but wasn't improving. Then he collapsed late on the sinday afternoon and we rushed him in to the emergency vets who couldn't see any reason for it. We struggled through the night but he was barely with us.

On Monday we attended the emergency clinic of our usual vets who again could not see any reason for his problem, they suggested we attended a specialist vets on referal. Which we did today.

What it transpired was that Oscar had an underlying heart and lung condition which was confirmed by a CT scan. The specialist vet suggested he would not improve, the only cure was a heart and lung transplant. and it would be best if he didn't wake up from the anasthaetic of the scan.

It was heartbreaking but we held him and loved him as he slipped peacefully away. I understand the last sense to go is hearing and we whispered loving words in to his ears as he went.

Sorry for the long post but I had to get it out.

Run free little man in eternal sunshine

I'm really so sorry for your loss and what a shock it must have been for it all to happen so quickly. Any rainbow bridge story is heartbreaking but any are made worse for me when the dog is called Oscar. My boy is called Oscar and I don't want to think about the time he isn't with me any more.

It's really tough to say but you did the right thing, you couldn't put Oscar through any more pain and suffering, as hard as it must be for you.

I really don't know what else to say other than try and be strong.

Stuart, how devastating for you and to happen so quickly. I am so very sorry for your loss. We know how much it hurts and you must be numb at the moment. No more pain for your little Oscar and it sounds like you have some wonderful memories that you can recall. I too had an Oscar, that name is so special to me also. Thinking of you at this very sad time. :(

Really sorry to read this news, Stuart. I hope that, in time, the happy memories will be stronger than those of the past few months.

Stuart so sorry to read your sad news it’s devastating when they go & hurts like h**l, I know exactly how you are feeling having been there April 2017, it’s awful with uncontrollable feelings. I don’t know what to say but you certainly have lots of happy memories try & think of them, easy for me to say that ‘not’ as I still can’t as it still hurts so much for me.

I did get another quite soon to easy my pain & it’s the best thing I did as my wee boy sure knows I needed him, sending hugs to you all. Xx

Thank you for all your kind words, still trying to come to terms with it. We thought we had turned a corner when he was signed off on wed from one condition only for it all to come crashing down.

Every where I turn I see things to remind me what has gone. You never really think about it till it’s gone.

Scratches on the door when he needed the loo, treats handy to distract him when cooking, doorbell rings and you expect him to race to the door to see who it is...

I've just read your post Stuart and like others have said, my heart goes out to you and your family. I lost a very special boy 4 years ago and I still sit and cry now. I hope in time you allow another furry friend onto your life, I think personally it will make the loss of Oscar easier to deal with, and he will always have a special place in your heart.

I was so sorry to read your post. Many of us have been where you are and it is just the worst feeling. Time dulls the ache but it never goes away.

Wonderful photos of Oscar Stuart and fantastic news that you are going to become slave to another little schnauzer. Hope you enjoy the comparisons, I certainly have loved comparing Otto to Oscar. Brings him back to life again.

You won't regret it. It took us 2 weeks after Barney left us to decide to get another. We had to wait a bit longer before we got Jasper. We're always comparing Jasper to Barney. Mainly saying "Barney would NEVER have done that" =)) It does bring them back to life. Looking forward to hearing about new puppy :D
