Researching Standard Schnauzer puppy breeders

Hi, I have just registered because I would welcome advice/guidance on finding breeders who can sell a suitable Standard Schnauzer puppy.
I have been retired now for around three and a half years and I am looking for a dog to keep me well exercised!! My wife and I had a Welsh Springer Spaniel bitch for an extremely happy 11 years and she is very sorely missed. We are now approaching 70 but both still pretty active and I miss the long walks. My wife is wary of taking on another Springer and was considering a miniature Schnauzer, but I can envisage no problem in coping with a Standard.
We also have a 4 year old granddaughter who visits regularly.
Research to date shows that Standard Schnauzer puppies are pretty scarce and so it seems we may have to be prepared to wait.
We live in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, but are prepared to travel in order to find the right dog.
I look forward to receiving whatever help and views which members feel able to provide.

Standard schnauzers are much more rare than miniature schnauzers and both are quite a different breed of dog from a Welsh Springer Spaniel. The Standard is a large strong dog with high energy and can be independent minded. The mini is much more adaptable, willing to go on long walks, companionable but can be vocal (barking readily!)

If you have no direct experience of these breeds, most especially the Standard Schnauzer, I would recommend that you try to go to an event such as Discover Dogs where you will have a hands on and face to face opportunity to see a wide range of dogs and speak to those who live with and/or breed them to discuss your lifestyle and expectations of having that breed of dog in the family:

If you are very much drawn to the schnauzer breeds in particular, then try to see if you can attend one of the breed club events / shows where you will also have an opportunity to meet and talk to owners and breeders and have a chance to see both standards and minis face to face. There are three major clubs who hold shows in different parts of the country throughout the year and if you check their websites you should be able to find dates and places.

I am sure other Forum members will be able to give you some advice and views regarding minis and standards but do also try to get to see them first hand as well and talk to their owners

This chart is relatively realistic in comparing the two breeds,but obviously the breeding lines,rank of pup in the pack and sex of pup will affect the choice you may make..

One thing to take into account is the st schnauzer is a demanding dog and may well be very active ten years down the line when you are approaching eighty..so with this in mind I'd vote for a mini,...big dogs in a smaller body...


I've had standard poodles for the last twenty years but when my girl passed ( one of two that were a great pair) I was left with the choice to get another large dog to compliment my remaining ST poodle (3 yr male) or downsize..
Like you I am retired,I am 63 ,very active in great health,and really admire the st schnauzer...but in the end I decided to go with a mini schnauzer to " get to know the breed" ,and I'm thrilled to bits...she keeps up with my St poodle boy,loves long walks, is definitely the one in charge( I chose the alpha pup in the litter)and looking ahead to when we both get a little older I believe this little pup will still keep my on my toes in a good way and not be over demanding as a ST schnauzer could be..
Being small the mini is so discrete you can travel wherever you wish,
grooming is a breeze..I I strip the dog each week in 20 mins) and no hair is shed in the house, and we give a weekly bath and trim furnishings,( 1 hr) so she is a welcome bed snuggler too...great in winter!
I say there is a dog for each phase of our lives and sometimes we have to take a pause to look ahead to envisage what the next stage may entail and choose accordingly..it's a leap to change breeds but if you make the right choice it's also very refreshing.
