Re: Driffield Show Mini's
As they are not here singing their own praises I thought I would post to say how proud Creggan is of his brother Maverick. He qualified for Crufts 2014 at his very first show - how brilliant is that
Big congratulations to Darksprite, Judith, Leigh, Robert and Julie for all their hard work
Congratulations also to Tom & Louis - now qualified for Crufts FOR LIFE
Also Lauren and Aida (Born on the same day as Maverick & Creggan) who also qualified for Crufts
Whats the word I am looking for? AMAZEBALLS - that's what that is ;)

Impressive, well done everyone
I knew Maverick and Louis kennel names. Whats Aidas ?
What's the best result achieved by for member at Crufts ? I realise qualifying is an achievement in itself

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
I dont follow the show world, so forgive my ignorance and am only following this as it involves the very lovely Creggan's brother but, am I right in thinking that as only 2 are in the results in Maverick's group, all he had to do was turn up and he'd have got a prize? Or, the two that are there, could have both not been awarded a prize and therefore that group would not have had any winners? same for all the groups where the entries are low? And please don't take my question as questioning Maverick's a worthy winner

Hi Bee Bee
If Maverick (or any of the other entrants for that matter) weren't worthy of a place, the Judge would not 'place them'

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
At certain Championship shows entries can be low due to economic constraints nowadays and therefore it is possible for classes to have only 1 or 2 dogs entered or to have more than this but a certain number of absentees which does result in few dogs in the ring. Of itself this does not necessarily reflect on the quality of the exhibits who have turned up. There is no actual prize in these classes but a dog/bitch achieving 1st-3rd placing at a Championship show that has Challenge Certificates available for the breed will qualify for entry to Crufts.BeeBee wrote:I dont follow the show world, so forgive my ignorance and am only following this as it involves the very lovely Creggan's brother but, am I right in thinking that as only 2 are in the results in Maverick's group, all he had to do was turn up and he'd have got a prize? A brief guide to judging :
At shows such as the one at Driffield, dogs are initially judged in a class which starts with Minor Puppy for dogs between 6 and 9 months of age. Dogs and bitches at Championship shows are also judged separately. The winners of all the dog classes then go forward to be judged against each other for Best Dog (or in the case of the bitches Best Bitch) and a Best Puppy Dog (and Bitch) will be selected from all unbeaten dogs/bitches under 12 months. Clearly it is always hard for a 6 month puppy at its first show to win the top prizes against older more mature and experienced puppies.
Following the judging of the dogs and the bitches, a further level of judging takes place to select the Best of Breed and Best Puppy. The Best of Breed will then go on to compete in the Group judging where it is up against all other Best of Breed winners and a Group winner will be chosen. This judging is usually a different judge to that which has judged the individual breeds. The Group winners will ultimately compete against each other for Best in Show which again is usually a different judge.
It is possible for a judge to withhold a placing in any class right up to the top level if they feel that the exhibit is not of a suitable quality as regards health, structure or conformation and this does happen. We know of several instances of this recently both in mini schnauzers and Giants as well as other breeds. For an exhibitor, although it is a great feeling to come home with a card to say you have achieved a placing, it is often the judge's critiques that can be of most interest. 1st and 2nd places in a class will be given a critique by the judge which will be published in newspapers such as Dog World and Our Dogs and these critiques are the judge's opportunity to highlight and comment on good conformation, temperament, structure and movement or to criticise points which they feel could be improved upon. We were lucky enough at Crufts last year with one of our dogs which gained 4th place (and therefore no critique) in a competitive class but later achieved 1st place in the Good Citizen class (against only one other dog albeit a Champion) that the judge in her critique of the class he won made favourable comments about him referencing the earlier class that it had been a very strong entry of first class dogs and highlighting our boy's good structure, movement and temperament. For us the comments were more rewarding than the card (and rosette in this instance).
At the end of the day for most people showing in our experience it is a hobby or significant interest in their life which involves them in an activity with the dog or dogs they love and while a win or Crufts qualification/win is something to aim for or celebrate, their dogs are part of their family and their pride at their achievement is no different to that of a parent whose child has gained recognition through taking part in an event - sports, school play etc.
Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole. ~Roger Caras

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
YOU Know Bee Bee it is not an exhibitors fault if there are low entries in a class.
Costs of entries force many would be exhibitors not to be able to afford the Champs shows.
It is unkind to an exhibitor who has won-- to then try to denigrate that win. A Judge can actually refuse to give a dog a place if they feel the dog is not worthy of a placing.
The dog in question looks beautiful and superbly presented. Much effort goes into the preparation for shows-- to keep the dog in top condition----So please do not try to hurt someone by denigrating their wins.
also it is certainly not simply a case of turning up. Have you ever been to dog shows or entered at a show at all? I am sure if you did you would make every effort to present your dog in as good a condition as possible. Many people have to travel hundreds of miles for some championship shows, it is not cheap or easy. so much preparation goes into it-- especially with a schnauzers coat and often against very experienced exhibitors.

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
Ok, I think you need to be a little more respectful in replies, you have responded rudely and made a lot of assumptions there. I asked a genuine question, in a field that I have no understanding of, which I said, but in which I am interested to know more....I thought I had made it clear I was NOT questioning the win, how could I when I said I know nothing about the show world, I wouldn't be as rude or arrogant to blurt out an opinion on something I was ignorant of. Your response could easily put me right off knowing more.dogsbody74 wrote:YOU Know Bee Bee it is not an exhibitors fault if there are low entries in a class.

.
Thank you Leigh for explaining it to me, and I expect others who aren't familiar with the intricacies of the world of showing dogs. When you see results showing a lot of gaps and not many entries, it is interesting to hear how this affects what judges do and say and critique. Thank god for someone willing to help me improve my knowledge on this topic.
I hope Robert and Maverick enjoyed their debut and we get to hear a lot more

Way to go Louis and Tom. Congratulations on gaining Louis stud book number and life time qualification for Crufts. He such a lovely boy and so deserves it
Well done too to Robert and Lauren with your babies. All the hard work has paid off. And if they weren't worthy of their places, the judge would have with held them ;)

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
I am right in thinking that even if they win a class they then still have to be examined by a vet who has an expertise in the breed. If in the case of say a bulldog the vet thinks there are problems with the breathing they can take away the win as this would be against improving the breed standard ?
