Re: The dreaded orange beard
Buttermilk powder works wonders on saliva staining. Just put about a tablespoon on their food once a day and it helps to correct the dogs pH level. It takes a little while to notice a difference but it does help. I have had great success with my grooming clients who have this problem.

Re: The dreaded orange beard
I gave always fed Dorothy on a mix of various fresh home cooked meats and RC mini shchnauzer dry, which to be honest she has flourished on, but been reading more and more about Lilly's kitchen dry I have decided to perhaps change to that. Just hoping that her beard doesn't go orange!

Are you in US? I ask I've not seen consumable buttermilk power for sale so had a look on ebay. It was all for sale in US, only for use in cosmetics in UKShantyll wrote:Buttermilk powder works wonders on saliva staining. Good heavens, Dorothy is already such a precious one I am not going down the bloody foundation route, it's bad enough getting my own without her getting in on itDawnspell wrote:Are you in US? You can get buttermilk powder on amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Now-Foods-Butte ... ilk+powder" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If it doesn't work, you can make pancakes with it.

Re: The dreaded orange beard
I have stopped using the medicated shampoo as it was making Roxy's chin itch. I still wash her beard every 3 or 4 days but with mild baby shampoo as before. I will go back to coconut oil as a conditioner as she loves it as the strawberry leave in conditioner makes her turn her head away. I use that on her legs now. I am increasing the amount of apple cider vinegar temporarily in her water as I think it is helping and I want to test it more.
last time I washed her I tried soaking her beard in olive oil mixed with lemon juice as a prewash. She liked the taste and I got some red staining off naturally on to a paper towel.
She is less pink burgundy and more gingery orange now. We went to Weston-Super-Mare for a blustery play on Saturday so there is some sand blended in on this picture.
Maybe I should wash her every day to get it whiter. I don't want to use chemicals around her mouth any more so if the natural ways don't work I will accept her as she is as it clearly doesn't bother her.

Re: The dreaded orange beard
Does the buttermilk raise or lower the pH values? I'm always trying to raise Lottie's, it needs to be about 7 to 7.5. A whiter beard would be an added bonus.

Buttermilk is alkaline - as is Apple cider vinegar (I believe!)

Re: The dreaded orange beard
I would have thought apple cider vinegar would be acidic which would be below ph 7. I do have ph papers will test later for definitive answer.Nika C wrote:Buttermilk is alkaline - as is Apple cider vinegar (I believe!)

In the interest of science I have just tested Organic Apple cider vinegar made from apples produced in a local orchard and it tested as pH 2-3
so very acidic.

Re: The dreaded orange beard
how cool that you just happen to have pH papers. Loving the now geeky approach to the beard problem.
My money is on buttermilk being alkaline?

Yes I was a chemistry nerd! And my mother never threw a single school book away!
I did think it sounded wrong but I had no reason to distrust the books heehee
And now I don't even look like a clever nerd :-/
