Re: My wee girl Milla.
I found this video from back in June last year when Milla was just coming up for 11 months old. I remembered I was training her on recall at the time although she had been coming back on command since that New Year.
She absolutely loves to run - I'm not joking she just picks a spot and away she goes, I think she thinks she is a racehorse - so I used to let her run until she was far enough away and then call her back.
She seemed to love coming back on recall so much that I never worried after that.
Nowadays when my sister or friends take her out it is one of the things they always mention - "Oh she always comes back when called"
As for how she was trained to do this, all I can think, was how I constantly called her in from the garden (10-15 times a day) when she was a lot younger and always praised her and gave her a treat. With a puppy the treat can be tiny, because it is the praise they love, the treat is just an added "benefit."

Blimey, I cannot believe how far away she ran, especially when she hit the shadows and it was probably hard to see exactly where she was but that is some cracking recall just one "Milla" and back she came, just as fast.
I seem to recall someone else on here calling you the Dog Whisperer Boyd, sounds like it's true

Re: My wee girl Milla.
Boyd, great video. Otto is much the same. He just flies and I love to see it. He seems to have a distance he is comfortable with which is a bit further than I am comfortable with but his recall on the whole is good and he checks in often by looking to see where I am. I find walking in the opposite direction from him works too and I occasionally hide behind a tree and call him to keep him on his toes. He gets rewarded every time for coming back whether I have called him or not. Dried liver is great but tends to attract other dogs to my treat bag too. lol. He doesn't get let off lead when there are dogs about unless we know them or when I don't have treats or in non secure areas. It has been interesting to watch him weigh up what to do when a dog does appear and he makes a decision to either run back to me or run to the dog. So far Mum has won but I can tell it is a very close run thing hence he goes on the lead when there are dogs about.
Do you still treat when she is out in the garden when you want her in or does she come in automatically. Otto is frustrating in that he will stand outside at the end of the walk thinking about whether he is going to get something if he decides to come in.

Hi Julie, yes I still give her a treat but only now and again as she seems programmed now to come in when called. She has also developed a "one bark, I want in now" for when she is not prepared to wait any longer for me to call her in.Oscar 12345 wrote: ↑03 Jan 2019, 11:20 Boyd, great video. When we are out she gets one or two fish jerky treats over the whole period, not so much as rewards but more like "energy top ups" You are right about other dogs "mooching" which is not always desirable.
Milla too will always weigh up a "new dog" situation but to be honest she is so blisteringly quick most dogs are not interested in chasing her. She does respond to "leave!" though if I realise the other dog is a bit timid, which is a good thing.
I don't know if I told you but she was attacked and nipped by a Jack Russell a month back, out of jealousy I think as she was playing with the other dog's pal. There was no blood drawn and I was severely reprimanded by friends and family for not using my stick, which I always carry. I didn't like the thought of lifting it to a small dog but believe me I will not think twice the next time. It hasn't seemed to affect Milla I'm glad to say.
Well it is walkies time so I better be off while the weather is good. All the best.
