Introducing Rosie
This is Rosie, our Black and Silver mini. She's 11 weeks old and is settling into life in Guernsey. We flew her over from a breeder near Blackpool. She's very stubborn (unless she knows you have training treats) and likes to mouth at everything in reach. She's quite timid and I have yet to hear her bark since we picked her up a week ago. I previously had a salt and pepper mini and I know how they like to sound off when they get excited.

Re: Introducing Rosie
Welcome to the Forum
Rosie looks very sweet and I am sure you will have lots of fun ahead with her.
As mentioned above though I think you will find that she is a pepper and salt mini rather than a black and silver. Black & silver miniature schnauzers have jet black ears and coat with white leg furnishings and beard. Even as puppies, the intense black coat stands out and the ear colour is a real guide.
There was a post recently looking at the difference between the two in puppies:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22987" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
However, colour is of little significance when you have a lovely little puppy to raise and share your life with. ...and enjoy the quiet for now as there are very few mini schnauzers who do not find their bark before they are out of puppyhood!

We're very close to Kings.Where are you? I've seen a few schnauzer walkers near Ron Short walk and in Water Lanes. I haven't seen a white mini on the island.
I wondered about her colouring too and thought she looked more like a salt and pepper (which I've previously owned but the breeder was firmly of the belief that she's black and silver.
Thanks Leigh for the link - it has confirmed for me that sh'e a S&P. Her colouring is of no importance to us , she simply a much loved family member.
Regards,
Sam

Re: Introducing Rosie
I've only come across one more white on the island, just met the owner though not the dog.
We're out St Peters and tend to do walks at pleinmont to the fairy ring, lihou headland, cliff paths, vazon headland (mainly Saturdays). Barney isn't into going on the beaches, he much prefers scenting bunnies out

Re: Introducing Rosie
Thanks everyone for your welcomes and photo's.
Rosie has been with us 2 weeks and is settling in well. She is just over 13 weeks old and now weighs 2.9 kilos so we expect her to end up between 5.5 and 6 kilos. Her walking on a lead is really good (until she sits down and decides she's not moving)! We are crate training her and she goes in around 10:30 pm without any fuss at all and usually don't disturb us until my alarm goes off at 6:15am when I get up to feed and walk her before work. So a clean puppy at night is great but she has a habit of having a random squat at a second's warning!
Overall she's a great little pup and is a much loved addition to our family.

Re: Introducing Rosie
It's coming up to 5 weeks since Rosie joined our family.
She's very reserved with strangers (people and dogs). She's a delight to take out for walks and trots happily along on a loose lead on my left. Having being mute for the first two weeks at home she's found her voice! I love the growl she gives when frustrated about something. It was first noticed when she was too timid to come down the stairs.
She's a bit of a mouther, rarely puts any pressure on, though we hope this is something that will stop when her adult teeth are complete. In addition, when I come in from work I'm always greeted by an excited puppy and have learned to ensure that she comes outside to meet me so that I have no pee to mop up. I have no experience of submissive or excitement incontinence and again this is something I hope will disappear with maturity.
She's left home alone for 4 hours every week day morning and has yet to pee or poop inside though she has access to the kitchen and utility room.
She's a delightful little pup and we all love her to bits.
All in all she's a well adjusted little pup and we love her to bits

Re: Introducing Rosie
Rosie is now 20 weeks old.
We started puppy training classes yesterday, not really for the obedience as we've been getting on well with that at home, but more for her to to socialise with other puppies ( 6 in the class in total). Being a schnauzer she didn't let us down. Anything that moved was barked at!! She kept it up for the whole hour; we honestly thought we'd be asked not to come back. We think it's a sign of anxiety and have some work ahead of us to calm her fears.
I've given her a couple of lights trims myself which have gone quite well but she's not at all keen on being brushed or combed and will wriggle like mad to get away.
She's a great little watch dog and has saved us from numerous attacks from the postman, milkman and carrier bags been blown down the road!
She's lost all her incisors and some of her adult ones have come through so she's a bit chewy with things at the moment but thankfully has never thought of anything other than toys worthy of chewing; that said, she does like to collect underwear and socks off the floor.
Being in Guernsey we have lots of great places to walk. This morning we went to Moulin Huet, where Renoir came to Guernsey to paint and we had a great romp on a deserted beach. So much so that she had a great sleep when we got home.

Re: Introducing Rosie
Love the photo Great to have the updates on Rosie and how she is developing too. She sounds very much a typical miniature schnauzer
The barking in class may not necessarily be a sign of anxiety. We have known of a number of mini schnauzer owners who have been told at puppy class that their mini is barking from anxiety /aggression and it is actually just sheer excitement. New places especially with other puppies / dogs can trigger huge excitement and in mini schnauzers that almost always means barking
You do need to try and keep Rosie calm and focused on you as much as possible but, unless you are certain that she is an anxious puppy, don't be drawn into "labelling" her as it can sometimes get in the way of helping her adjust to new experiences and have you worried about introducing her to different dogs /people / places. Hopefully the training class will be supportive and helpful though in any event.
Look forward to seeing Rosie's further development too
