Introducing Schnauzer number 2

The Miniature Schnauzer is a smallest dog in the Schnauzer breed and originated in the mid-to-late 19th Century from Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and other smaller breeds such as the Poodle. A miniature Schnauzer is a spunky, but aloof dog who does things their own way. They tend to be good guard dogs without the tendency to bite.

So we flew from Guernsey this morning and picked up "Flobeando Topsy Nutmeg" who will be known as Edie. Rosie's unsure what to make of her but I'm sure they'll be firm buddies in no time.

My wife and I are off work for the next 5 weeks between us so we have quite a while to get them acquainted.

I can already tell that Jo will approve of her coat for stripping :)

What a lovely picture of Edie, she looks confident in herself already, bless her. I'm sure Rosie will get on fine with her, it may take a day or two for her to adjust to having a shadow following her around all the time :)

Good luck :D

Absolutely gorgeous! and yes,I've already imagined her with a stripped coat, those markings are stunning.
It took mine about three days to really relax around each other, just keep giving Rosie top place.

I don't know whether to put the first night down to luck.

Rosie sleeps on the bottom of our bed but started off being crated in our room. Edie was crated at 10.30, gave a couple of whimpers so I turned the lights out and I was wakened at 5.30 by Edie giving two howls. I took her outside where she piddled and as she seemed wide awake I played with her for about an hour. I went and got Rosie, fed them both and walked Rosie while carrying Edie.

I hope then next few nights prove to be as easy.

You'll know that I've spoken about Rosie's anxiety? She's curious about Edie but wants to watch rather than interact with her. They have given each other a good nose to nose sniff but Edie doesn't understand why Rosie doesn't want to play. Given Rosie's personality, and the first day together, I'm optimistic that they will bond, in time.

Sam, you really couldn't wish for a better start. I think you are right, the signs are there that when Rosie has duly completed her observation stage she will then commence the "engage" stage. (Just making these stages up for anyone who thinks I really understand how dogs bond :) )

Introducing Edie

Post by Schnauzer Sam »

Things have moved on really well between Edie and Rosie although I'm already sure that Edie will be the dominant one in the relationship. I have never seen such confidence in an 8 week puppy. She struts round the garden with all the attitude in the world.

I've been working on basic training with her; recall, sit and down and over the 4 short sessions she has already shown progress and realises that unless she sits the food isn't presented. That's not at all how it started. I'd forgotten just how sharp the first teeth are :))

I put up a 50cm fence today as she was continually going into the flower bed. I popped in to the house for a drink and discovered her in the flower bed so I lifted her out and looked to see how she got in buy saw nothing of note. Next thing she charged across the lawn and jumped at the fence, which buckled under her weight, she climbed in to the flowerbed and the fence popped back again. All I could do was laugh at her initiative and I'll need to come up with a better solution!

We've been socialising her with neighbours, friends and family and getting her used to noises in the garden and the house but nothing has fazed her.

I love that story of her charging at the fence, then as it buckles, her scrambling onto the flower bed - clever girl :D

I think you will have your hands full with Edie (but in a good way), she sounds like my Sasha :)

Sounds like Otto too. We have a 12 inch solid box hedge around our borders and I thought that would keep him out. No, he just charges through it. Oscar meanwhile would have just looked at it and thought, not going through there, it might hurt. Lovely to hear that things are going well. Very disappointed though, you are not doing very much to put me off having another. ;)

Julie, it's so great having two.

I was really torn whether to get another (Sasha) when we already had our Oscar, who I dotted on and loved to bits but bringing in a little sister for him has been great. As much as I used to play with Oscar and take him out etc, it's different having another Schnauzer for them to play with, if that makes sense?

I still play with Oscar (and Sasha) but they have fun together too. You sort of don't think you could love another in the same way but you do, we all have loads of love to go around :D

Thanks Mike! You are such a sweetie, if I can't come back as one of Leigh's dogs then I want to come back as one of your schnauzers. Seriously, I think I have already decided to have another in a year or so. Husband is taking some persuading though. The key question for me is, if he has a little sister to play around with will he leave my slippers alone or will I have them two of the little blighters running around with them....

So on either side of me I have a neighbour, one with two cats and one with three cats. The one with three cats is very "live and let live" but the one with two is a bit of a grumbler.

She spotted Edie yesterday in the garden and asked if we were looking after the pup for a friend and I told her that she was ours. She shouted out for her husband who came to see (when you're summonsed by her it would be foolish not to respond). "Oh she's lovely", he said. "No, it's another one of the same type", she retorted and then added, "Sam why do you have to have two dogs"? My response led her to to walk inside when I said, "Why does anyone want more that one animal"? Game, set and match I thought- and polite too :)
