Insurance for dog carers

The Miniature Schnauzer is a smallest dog in the Schnauzer breed and originated in the mid-to-late 19th Century from Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and other smaller breeds such as the Poodle. A miniature Schnauzer is a spunky, but aloof dog who does things their own way. They tend to be good guard dogs without the tendency to bite.

Insurance for dog carers

Post by schnauzerfan » 15 Nov 2019, 22:59

I am lucky enough to have an ex schnauzer owner looking after my dogs in her home.
I am concerned my friend has no insurance as a carer..
I promised to look on my computer for suggestions and I am at a loss. Companies I’ve never heard of or the wrong information.
I’m sure one or more of the schnauzer community can advise me. Please!

No worries re duplicate posts - I have deleted them :-)

There are a couple of links here to companies that offer insurance for pet home boarders. The first is through Petplan who offer insurance generally for pets:

https://www.petplansanctuary.co.uk/pet- ... -insurance

This organisation is specifically for those running small businesses for pet families such as dog walking and home boarding -'they may be able to offer useful advice to your friend re her dog boarding as well:

If your friend is doing home boarding for dogs on a regular basis / for payment (in that it is a business) she should also let the local council know and may need a licence. Although it may seem awkward and involving paperwork and likely inspection, if anything did go wrong at any time with a dog being boarded, the consequences for her uninsured and unregistered could be bad.

Hope this is of some help.

Brilliant! Thank you so much!
My friend lives in a borough that has a well set up system for registration. But you know how it is ... look after one dog, then another comes along and you don't do paperwork and nothing has happened so far....
I am also aware that KC used not (probably still doesn't) pay out on a claim if the dog is being boarded unofficially.

There is a link here which may help too:

https://www.protectivity.com/knowledge- ... -licences/

I know how quickly dog related businesses can grow nowadays. A lady in our small village set up a dog walking and boarding business when she retired and was soon inundated with clients and has recently had to stop doing it as it was taking up all her time!

Even if your friend does not feel as though she is really running a business, it's best to look into the requirements and legalities just to be sure :-)
