If you've got the option to set the shutter speed and let the camera take care of the aperture then sometimes thats the easier option, I think to freeze the action with a dog running/playing you'll probably achieve that with 1/750sec or above. This is much easier to capture on a bright day and the colours will be so much better too.

If i'm taking pictures of Wookie I tend to put it on the Auto setting for Sport, it seem to cope with Wookie movement as she doesn't really do "still" apart from when she's asleep.
