Lying with back legs fully stretched out
Is this whole lying stretched right out with back legs fully splayed out a miniature schnauzer thing or is it just my mini schnauzer?
I had assumed it was a just puppy thing and that he'd grow out of it but he's now coming up to 8 months old and still does it.

Re: Lying with back legs fully stretched out
I know other breeds of dogs who do this, its not a mini thing. Renae still does it, she's going to be 5 at the end of the year Even our stiff hipped ex-puppy farm dog Susie-Belle does it rather cutely

I've been told it's a puppy thing but they don't always grow out of it. Toto is almost 11 months now & frequently lies like that. I think it's very cute.

Definitely not just a puppy thing. Billy the mini is nearly three and still does it occasionally .
I think various breeds must be jointed differently as Harry the English Setter doesn't do it. He cannot "sit" without backing up a few steps, normal for that breed according to the trainer, but Billy will sit straight down. AM I MAKING SENSE!**!

Tilly still does it, especially when she's hot, lying on the kitchen floor. I've always assumed that she does it to get as much of her belly skin in contact with the cold tiles so as to cool the blood.
We call it the Spatchcock Position.

Re: Lying with back legs fully stretched out
Nervous or aggressive dogs rarely do it, so be grateful. The nowty or nervous ones seem to see lying like that as taking extra fractions of a second to jump up and attack, or run off, so they seem to always lie normally. Just my observations. I think hip dysplastic dogs don't do it as it would be painful to them, so again, probably a good sign their back ends aren't falling apart

Re: Lying with back legs fully stretched out
Mine both regularly adopt this as one of their frequent relaxing position of choice. We don't know their exact ages, but they fall into the 'mature' age group
Of course, other typical positions include upside down, stretched out; upside down with head tipped down over the edge of something, draped over things, but I think this is also common with most Schnauzers from what I've seen

My Giant Schnauzer has always done this (he's now 3 years old). Think he does it mainly when he's too warm and wants to cool his big belly down!

Oscar still does it at the age of 7.
He also loves to lie on the back seat of the car with his head in the door pocket.
