Schnauzerfest 2019

Hello!
I haven't been here for such a long time - life changes, challenges come along, blah blah blah...but after speaking with Dean, he's happy for me to post today about a UK-wide, actually reaching right across the British Isles including Guernsey event happening this weekend - Schnauzerfest.

If you're not familiar with it, the forum played a big role in getting it off the ground in 2014 when it ran for the first time. Walks are held, hosted by volunteers who will this weekend be out (whatever the weather) with their schnauzers and friends, raising money for rescue dogs.

In the first year, we raised £7702 - an incredible amount of money to raise from simple dog walks on a first go at doing something like it nationwide. Since then, we have raised over £160,000 together, every single penny of which has gone to help dogs in rescue who have been saved from puppy farms or other bad backgrounds. The money has restored the eyesight of many blind puppy farm dogs, given others life saving treatment, treated neurological conditions and much more.

None if it happens without the kindness and generosity of a great many people. More can be read on our website: www.schnauzerfest.org

if you'd like to join a walk this weekend, it's really simple, just find one on our map, turn up and have some fun. Make a donation if you'd like to (there's no set fee to take part). Some walks are large affairs, Barry Island in Wales is one of the biggest with a few hundred people and dogs taking part each year now, others are smaller, quieter ones like Guernsey or Orkney) and all are brilliant.

I look forward to being part of the forum once again, a lot has happened in my world since I last posted, including the loss of my beloved Susie-Belle and this summer, Twinkle who some of you may remember me writing about when they first came into my life.

We support Schnauzerfest; my two will be attending with me at Holmbury Hill, Surrey - we went last year and it was a great event.

A very worthwhile cause too!

Thanks, Holmbury was new last year and it was great, looks like a good crowd is heading there again this year. Think Ali has adjusted the route a bit, enjoy it :)

Briliant, host Tatiana will be pleased, think she was worried it might just be her! We said not :)
Yes, remember her photos from last year's stormy one, at least it doesn't look like that will happen, and I think as we all survived the drenchings last year, anything can be done for the dogs now :))

Hope everyone has a great time. I was going to take Otto to one, he is good with schnauzers but I think he would be overwhelmed with so many of them so we will do our own schnauzer walk and make a donation. :)

We'll miss it :( we'll be on the ferry heading back to Guernsey. I Jasper would love being a loon with other schnauzers :D

That's a shame, it was a decent gathering on Guernsey and much better weather than last year's howling gale and storm that swept the UK, very inconveniently over Schnauzerfest weekend =))

We have had a brilliant Schnauzerfest 2019 :)

With 72 walks, there were 1000s of paws out and about over the weekend with their humans. Some walks were under blue skies, some were wet - not a single host pulled out even though the weather was challenging in the lead up with one host having hers flooded the day before but not giving up, she found an alternative venue and had a great walk - her first time of hosting and she is back for 2020, not deterred at all. This is typical of the great spirit of commitment that Schnauzerfest seems to bring out in people. It is amazing, very uplifitng in a world that often is not.

When we first did it in 2014 - an idea the forum here helped to get off the ground - we raised £7702. The fund today stands at over £72,000 and it is still rising. Astonishing generosity from many, many people. All money raised helps rescued schnauzers, in the main they've been saved from puppy farms. They usually come out with complex and horrible veterinary needs which are costly to treat. All the money this year goes to registered charity the Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre; we've supported them every year, a couple of years some of the funds also went to another small independent rescue, East Midlands Dog Rescue (both are registered charities). To restore the eyesight of a dog blinded by cataracts (which is where a good chunk of the annual fundraising goes) it costs £4000-£5000. But to do so, to give dogs this chance at a new, sighted life when they have had such a terrible one before rescue, is so valuable and it is what my dog Susie-Belle benefited from, and why I started Schnauzerfest.

We have had some great local press coverage, at least 3 local BBC Radio Stations did something for their local walks which was great fun for the hosts involved. And here's some local news which picked up on the Schnauzerfest buzz:
Brean Beach, Somerset

If you missed out taking part, we run our Schnauzerfestive Season which are walks held between 1 December - 6 January and hosts are coming forwards now, we have 20 walks confirmed and more to come. These walks are a bit different from our October ones, fundraising take a backseat and the focus is much more on being out and about, having fun with our dogs, they love being around other schnauzers after all. It's also a nice way for people to trial run a location for an October 2020 walk. All welcome so if you fancy giving it a whirl being involved with Schnauzerfest as a walk host, let me know, and there's lots of info on the website.
