What about diet Michelle, have you tried changing? What do you feed?

He has been on Acana for years. Both grain free and wholesome grains, neither seem to make a difference.

I have supplemented with homemade food here and there but never homemade food only and never raw. I am concerned that by doing either completely I would cause them to lack their full nutritional needs.

Hi Michelle - you would need to research carefully regarding a home cooked / homemade diet but there is no reason why it could not be nutritionally balanced. Regarding raw feeding, there are many good quality small businesses specialising in raw food for dogs nowadays certainly in the U.K. which have high quality ethically sourced and balanced meals which you can purchase frozen. We have raw fed for 14 years now and our 12 dogs thrive on the diet.

The problem you have with your mini may not be diet related but it could be worth trying a change if you have ruled out other possibles - chemicals, environmental toxins, reaction to anything applied to his skin or on his blankets etc.

I would recommend also checking out any integrated vet service you can find which offers a wider approach to healing or a homeopathic vet if you are struggling to find a solution.

Michelle, I would definitely try a fresher more natural diet. The dry food that you are feeding is very highly processed and full of synthetic vitamins. I think a more simple diet with just a few ingredients is what I would try. These days, raw completes are so easy and many contain all the nutriments needed without you having to worry. It is probably much easier than you think. I have heard of lots of dogs transitioning to a raw diet for skin problems to disappear and itchiness stop. I am a member of a raw feeding Facebook group, not sure whether I can mention it here but if you PM me I will let you know. There are many people that have transitioned successfully and details of brands and also experiences of owners who have switched. If you are remain unconvinced or are very nervous then Leigh's advice of seeking out a holistic vet is a good one. I would recommend a couple, Dr Brendan Clarke and also Dr Nick Thompson, they both do telephone consultations and are real specialists in natural feeding.

I wanted to give a follow up on my dog whose ears have had matching scabby spots on them for the last number of months.

I switched my dogs food from kibble (that I was adding fresh ingredients to), to a whole food freeze dried dog food called Sojo’s. This has made a big difference.

I’m not claiming Sojo’s was the magic fix, however I do think the diet change has helped tremendously. My miniature schnauzer now has what is like small scars where the scabs used to be but they no longer scab up.
