Cushing disease v diabetes v overweight

Post by Dancon »

Hi, haven’t been on here for an while but my Stanley is showing some unusual behaviour that I don’t know whether it is down to the hot weather and being overweight or something more sinister like diabetes or specifically Cushing seems disease. He seem to be drinking more now and is getting us up in the night for a drink and to go our which he didn’t used to do. He isn’t also panting more than normal. He isn’t quiet during the day and doesn’t pant much except when walking and doesn’t go out more than normal, it’s just seems to be at night or in the early hours. Could it be just heat related, wondered what people thought. He isn’t just over 8 years of age, still bounces about on his walk at the beginning. He is eating ok. Thanks Lesley

Lesley sorry to hear Stanley isn't himself. I would take him to the vets for their view. You've picked up on a warning sign which is the drinking more which leads to going to toilet in the night. It is important to find out why this is happening.

Hi Lesley,

Getting up for a wee might be due to him drinking more because of the heat. Have you changed his food at all recently? The reason I ask is that I am trying to get both my dogs on a cold pressed food but I've noticed that they are drinking much more than before.

However, I'd make a vet's appointment but would try to take a sample of his urine with me as both conditions are tested with analysis of blood and urine.

Hi Lesley..
I'd definitely do a blood and urine test..he's at the age for a general health test anyway,( I'd also ask the vet to manually test his prostate too ,just because of his age,not because of these symptoms).,,

Now then, what are your in house temperatures? The other evening my little dog panted when she came upstairs for the first time..never seen this...then,I checked and my room was 29c indoors!!!,far too hot..
Both my dogs are drinking a lot more ..we are in Italy....weeing more too....so if uk temps are still high it's probably this...but given yr dogs age,he's ready for a general health test I'd say.

Thanks so much everyone, you have pretty much confirmed what I was thinking about taking him to the vet. Last night he went for his walk at half nine, we went to bed at midnight, he came up at 3am to go out and again at 5:30am to go out. But what I can’t understand is he then went right up until 11am before needing to go again! Our house is hot, even we are warm as is the air outside still whihcbis why we walk him late. I haven’t changed his food at all, he is a finicky eater, my fault, so I darent change much. I will take him to the vet, was thinking of waiting until the weather cools to see whether it continues but probably best as you all say to go sooner rather than leave it. Thanks again, will let you know what happens, I hate leaving him at the vets, he is terrified of them. Oh dear

Lesley, you shouldn't have to leave him at the vets or perhaps you vet is different to mine. Do take a urine sample with you if you have a container. It will save time. Hope everything goes well.

Just a quick update, Stanley has diabetes. The vet has just called me to let me know, I have to go with him tomorrow, starved, for further tests and to be shown how to use the insulin. I feel so guilty as I feel it is all my fault, I gave him way too many treats and made him fat, and now have caused this. Just wanted to update you all who were so kind to offer guidance. Any other help or advice regarding diabetes would be appreciated . Lesley x

Hi Lesley,

Firstly, don't blame yourself as it may not have anything to do with you.

You're going to the vets tomorrow and will find more out then but in pets there are 2 types of diabetes - the same as in humans. My stepdaughter has type 1 diabetes and I have managed her condition for the past 10 years.

Type 1 is when the body does not produce insulin and you need to inject insulin during the day - usually after meals. It is caused when the pancreas stops producing insulin and the reasons for this are not fully understood but it is not due to being overweight. If Stanley has type 1 then it's for life.

Type 2 is when the body does not respond in the same way to the insulin the body is still producing and this is usually due to being overweight. Type 2 can be reversible through weight loss and exercise, but not always.

When carbohydrates are eaten the level of glucose in the blood increases and insulin is injected to lower the blood glucose levels. Whether it's type 1 or 2 it's usual to try and restrict the intake of carbohydrates so as to minimise the use of insulin required. This means that the blood glucose levels are more stable and predictable and makes the management of the condition much easier.

Please keep us updated on Stanley's progress.

Lesley, so sorry to hear that. I don't really know very much about diabetes, however, taking Sam's point above and not knowing which type your little boy has, I would want to find out from the vet whether you could try weight loss and the appropriate diet over a period of time and check blood again for improvement to see whether his condition can be managed without insulin.
