Re: Acute renal failure and diet
That's great news the Newmarket vet found a potential issue with the meds he was prescribed. I wish Rubert a full recovery! I have hope it was Metacam causing the issues with his kidneys as it happened to my girl as well and he can rebound completely due to his young age and it's acute

Re: Acute renal failure and diet
So I have been waiting for all Sherman’s bloods to be back to update you all.
So his SDMA is still a bit high and his urine still a bit unconcentrated but everything else is ok, liver enzymes back to normal. So we are at the point of saying that Sherman has renal insufficiency so is sat with low level renal damage. He will have bloods again in 3 months and if still the same then we would be saying he has chronic kidney damage.
But... we are a positive family and I can’t do anything about it. So this is prob as good news as we could hope for other than obviously it not having affected him at all, but that didn’t happen so here we are!
He’s going to stay on the renal diet for now, retested again in 3 months like I said then if all stable we will go to 6 monthly.
This level of damage may never affect him or it could progress suddenly we just don’t know. We will protect his kidneys from harm as much as we can and the good thing is we have the facts and can do this.
No nsaids for any of my lads unless there is no other choice ! And Sherman is never ever having any !

Re: Acute renal failure and diet
Glad to hear that there is some positive news and Sherman’s liver enzymes are back to normal. Paws and fingers crossed that all remains stable and you can reduce the frequency of tests and there are no further repercussions from the current level of damage. It must be so emotionally draining for you going through this with dear Sherman. Thinking of you and sending hugs to all

Exactly, after losing Barnaby I thought I would be prepared for the next health drama but we weren’t! So we just treasure having him here still, pestering us for lunch!

Re: Acute renal failure and diet
Little update on Sherman, as somehow it’s been a year since this all started! No idea where 2021 went !
He’s had a couple of lots of bloods done since my last update about 3 months apart, and slowly his renal failure is getting worse unfortunately. Back in August we definitely confirmed he had chronic renal damage and the last lot of bloods taken in December showed the worsening.
Nothing we can do at the minute but monitor every 3 months and intercept with medication if we need to.
In himself he’s a happy lad, lots of trotting with penguin and walking as little as he wants he likes a good snooze and not so much exercise, so that’s what we are focusing on and trying to ignore the numbers (if you know me you’ll know that’s a challenge for me)

Lovely photo of Sherman!
Sorry to hear that the news is not good but it sounds as though he is still enjoying life as much as he can. He knows he can relax and take things at his own pace with your love and penguin to keep him happy.
Thinking of you and sending hugs xx

Re: Acute renal failure and diet
We had nearly another 5 years with Barney after his diagnosis and he remained happy in himself until the end. I was a bit obsessive about what went in his mouth in case it did him harm

Re: Acute renal failure and diet
He got so hangry on just the renal diet I now feed him part renal part raw, what will be will be but a hangry Sherman isn’t a good thing. So totally concentrating on whatever time we have being his best time
I think his next lot of bloods will give us more of an indication on the speed of deterioration. But I think I say that every time!
