Looking after the health and welfare of your Schnauzer can be a full time job. You will find information on neutering, spaying, vaccinations, vet visits, upset tummies, Schnauzer bumps and much more here. Ask a question and someone will have had a similar experience. We also appreciate updates on how your Schnauzer is recuperating. A separate section is dedicated to our older Schnauzers.

Thats good news
With Barneys renal failure they said the only way to tell how bad the kidney damage was, was to do a biopsy a scan didnt really show much, the bloods just gave an indication of how well they were working. We knew his was permanent and didnt want to put him through general anesthetic so didnt have biopsy.
Oh that’s interesting to know, thank you. I may need to face facts that we know there will be damage there and I just need to support the ole kidneys as much as I can. I was a nurse and like facts and plans so this is a struggle !!!
The vet is ringing this evening to let me know if he’s being referred or not. When Barnaby was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis we were Iucky the vets we were with did scans and because we were worried about cancer we had the biopsy done which gave us the answers!
He’s ok in himself but he’s prob only about 50% Sherman as normally he is literally a Tank. He reminds me a lot of when Barnaby was poorly and i guess he just feels a bit pants. It’s all just been a bit of a shock I guess, so once it all sinks in I will hopefully get less ‘why, what, how!!!?!’

Sherman is doing ok still on his renal meds and renal diet. We are having an issue with loose stools and vomiting but hoping it’s just a blip over the last few days.
We have an appointment at Dick Whites Newmarket on the 27th so looking forward to seeing if we can find anything out at all. If we can’t we can’t but worth a go I think as he’s only 6.
Meanwhile Sherman thinks 3 meals a day are the best thing ever !

I offer my advice freely, but I am not an expert, breeder, groomer or behaviourist. It is simply my experience of raising pups in a way that seems to make sense.
Oh I hope everything goes ok on the 27th! Poor lad, he had a rough go at 2021.
My old girl (almost 15YO) had chronic renal failure. I had a hard time getting her to eat (anything), so it's great Sherman is eating his renal food with gusto! My girl also had infection, the vet told me (sometimes) the kidneys levels go back to a normal level after antibiotic treatment (if it was acute). I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Sherman he bounces right back. He looks great, such a good looking boy!
My girl couldn't tolerate Metacam, just to let you know it's hard on the kidneys. This was before we knew about her renal issues, just had to let you know in hindsight, that's why she was vomitting with the anti inflammatories.
Just a thought, not clued up on kidney problems but omega 3 rich foods are supposed to help kidney problems so oily fish, sardines, mackerel, sprats etc.

Its better to give an omega 3 supplement rather than the fish. They have bones in which is not good for kidneys I
So pleased he's doing well keeping fingers and paws crossed

So he went to Dick Whites in Newmarket on wednesday and he is now sporting some fancy clipped bits !
Overall he is doing well, I would describe him as having low batteries so we get the Tank back for a few mins then he snoozes.
Basically he has had a full MoT and he has had an acute kidney injury and liver damage most likely caused by the NSAIDS he was given for a cyst that erupted on his side just before Christmas.
All the tests have shown that he hasn’t had kidney damage over 60% and we are just waiting for one more test to come back which detects kidney damage at a lower level before the vet decides what to do about his meds and renal diet. We will be looked after by Newmarket and if his liver enzymes continue to go up he will need a bit more investigation. But livers are amazing so hopefully it will sort itself out. The milk thistle is arriving tomorrow

Glad to hear that there is some positive news and hope you can get Sherman back to his usual self before too long. The liver is an amazing organ as you say and can recover with help so keeping everything crossed here that things continue to improve. Sending hugs to you and Sherman

That is really reassuring news, hope that he just continues to get better. I would also ask the specialist vet in Newmarket their advice on long term support supplements for Sherman whilst you are there.

Thank you, I have bought up half of dorwest I use a lot of their products for all of them. We still have a bit of a test ahead of us.
First line is get the blood test back which had to be sent of, if that’s ok we will prob stop his meds and retest bloods, then we will do the same with the renal diet if he’s ok.

So the last test came back raised indicating renal damage. But the vet at Newmarket who has been amazing contacted my vets to find out exactly why he was put on the medication and he wants us to try Sherman off it and then repeat bloods in 4 weeks incase the meds are actually making his kidneys work harder.
So still no answers but hopefully we will have more of an idea about liver/kidney damage in 4 weeks.
He’s doing ok, having little walks and the odd big one when he fancies it, little plays with Rupert and lots of snoozing.
