Allergy info

Looking after the health and welfare of your Schnauzer can be a full time job. You will find information on neutering, spaying, vaccinations, vet visits, upset tummies, Schnauzer bumps and much more here. Ask a question and someone will have had a similar experience. We also appreciate updates on how your Schnauzer is recuperating. A separate section is dedicated to our older Schnauzers.

Allergy info

Post by hula-hoop »

Following on from my post in one of the threads in the 'introduce yourself' section, I am putting all the links here of pages I found helpful when wishing to become a dog owner and having to deal with allergies!

I have had dogs as a child and was always snuffling, sneezing, had red eyes, itchy ears and throat etc - yep, allergy to dog fur/dander/saliver. I was desperate for a dog as an adult and did a bit of research (hence arriving at the schnauzer breed) into products that may be useful. I havent personally tried all of these.

http://www.healthy-house.co.uk/products/pet_allergy.php I have bought the 'pet allergy pack' (aircleanse, petal cleanse and homecleanse and do think it has helped, plus I like the smell and stanley thinks its a fun game to be coated in the petalcleanse stuff!)

For me I have found that taking 1/2 an anti-histamine tablet most days (especially when Im going to be around more allergy inducing dogs), plus the odd spray with the biolife petal/home/aircleanse, and the occasional use of the air purifier works a treat.

Great thread, that's so useful for new members who, like you said, come through needing to know these things.

It's a thread that always stays at the top of a section so it's always easy to find. The icon next to it is also a little different, it looks like a splat.
Cara and Mo, two black mini's and Molly a black & white Heinz 57 all served by Elaine, the cook, poop picker, and chief toy thrower.

Just to add, I no longer take 1/2 an antihistamine regularly - the only time I take it is prior to brushing Stanley, or if we are going to visit our friends who have 2 JRT's. All the other times I am fine.

I also no longer use the air purifier or any of the petalcleanse stuff.

Stanley goes all over our house, sleeps on our bed, jumps all over me etc etc, and I am fine! I reallty do think that a) schnauzers are a very good allergy friendly breed and b) maybe I have become acclimatised to it...THERE IS HOPE FOR EVERYONE!! (bigthumbs)

I had asthma as a child and often had allergies because of the dog's fur. We even tried to take care of a mini pincher because their fur/hair are so small and thick but that in itself proved to be the problem.

So, you have to find a workaround to be able to take care of one, if you really would love to. You could try getting over it through exposure or even keeping a regular maintenance to prevent sudden attacks.

I am exactly the same, my asthma has actually improved since we got Flynn, as has my allergy to other dogs. My allergy to cats has almost gone.

Now the problem is that HE's allergic - to dust - :-? !!!
