hippity hop

Post by flugelboneman »

we are bringing our third std into adulthood. he is now just a year old. recently he seems to have adopted a little hop when he is trotting. about every third step he picks up his left hind leg. at full gallop when he is tearing thru the bush, there is no evidence he is favoring his leg. he is in no discomfort at any time. i have examined the leg and moved it back and forth and there is no clicking or discomfort. it seems as if he has just developed a habit of picking that leg up when he is loafing along. we will have our vet check it out but just wondering if any other of his ilk have adopted a hippity hop, only whle trotting.

I believe a limp or " hop" has a reason.
The dog is shifting weight to relieve a discomfort or pain..
In a larger breed I would suggest you have his cruciate ligament checked by a specialist in orthopedics...
My dogue de Bordeaux started with an intermittent lifting of her back leg..,rest and antiinflammatories did give relief and for a time helped cover her symptoms..she was one year when this started..
We had her acl surgery a few months after....then at three years the same knee reruptured the acl..another surgery..
You could try enforced rest for at least a week, anti inflams and only on lead walks to see if he improves..
You could also visit a physio to see if his hips and spine are ok..no misalignment etc.
Later,.x Ray if no improvement would be my next suggestion.
Good luck..limping is a worry,it should not be accepted as normal. (Not saying you are,but don't leave it too late or limb can become arthritic)

Thx for ur input. Will have cheke
d by vet if persists. As stated only time it shows is when he loafs. His acceleration is blinding as his ability to keep from a standstill. He shows no pain symptoms.
