Seeking puppy for August onwards

The Standard Schnauzer is a working or utility dog and is the original breed of the three sizes. Standard Schnauzers are generally a robust, squarely built, medium-sized dog with aristocratic bearings.

Seeking puppy for August onwards

Post by Boombang »

Hi all, we have spent 3 years around our neighbour's wonderful Schnauzer and with a permanent change in our working patterns this year is the right time to try to get our own.

We plan a trip away this summer but then are able to spend loads of time with a puppy.

Our neighbour advised us to steer away of one breeder, they were not happy with the conditions (12 years ago) and I have contacted 3 others in the South of England, none of whom I have heard back from.

Can anyone recommend breeders preferably local to Essex or South East via PM please?

Are we looking too early?

Hi Alex and welcome to the Forum :)

As you may gather from other puppy seeking enquiries on the Forum this past 9 months or so, this has been a very bad time to be looking for a puppy from a reputable breeder as due to the lockdown restrictions many of the best breeders have put on hold having litters or puppies and may also have long waiting lists of people from the past year looking to get a puppy as soon as they have another litter.

If you are looking for a standard schnauzer or a Giant you will also have to have patience in that few standards are bred each year ( less than 100 puppies in the whole of the U.K. in 2020 in the first three quarters of the year) and not many more Giants. Mini schnauzers are bred in higher numbers overall but they too have been affected by the restrictions and numbers of pups available from reputable breeders is significantly down on previous years.

The first place to check for breeders of any size of schnauzer is through the Kennel Club Assured Breeder lists and also you could contact the Secretary of the schnauzer breed clubs: Schnauzer Club of Great Britain; Northern Schnauzer Club and the Miniature Schnauzer Club and /or Giant Schnauzer Club. The link to the first of these is below but all have their own websites.

It can never be too early to research and contact breeders to make sure you have found a responsible breeder with the highest standards of welfare for their dogs and puppies and offering comprehensive support and advice to new puppy families. When you contact them, give as much information as possible about your family, experience with dogs, lifestyle, home environment etc. Also question the breeder about their dogs, how they raise their puppies etc. There is plenty of information on what to look for in a breeder in topics on the Breeding and Puppy sections of the Front Page on the Forum.

Good luck in your search :)

Thank you, I have tried the 4 nearest 'standard' KC breeders (of the 20 or so) with no response but plan to call back around in the next few weeks and go out further in distance.

Much as I would love a giant the practicalities of a dog that size do not really work for us unfortunately.

Likewise we are active and unsure if our typical activities would be too much for a mini. We live between a country park and miles of farmland, a typical weekend is a couple of 2+ hour walks with the last few months being very muddy and hard going. During the week we each tend to get out for a walk around work, plus ocassional bike rides down a lane/byway network.

We know our neighbour's schnauzer gets walked regularly through the week and can stand up to the longer multi hour walks at the weekend.

We do appreciate a puppy won't be up to the exercise we are used to, but an adult dog that can take whatever you can throw at it (within reason) would be ideal.

If we are totally wrong about the mini's robustness please someone do tell me!
