Socialising Puppy

Post by YaYa »

Our puppy Colton has been home with us now for two weeks. He has settled in really well and is doing brilliantly with sleeping through the night and having lots of naps through out the day. Also toilet training has been (dare I say it) a breeze,
no accidents inside, not one. :-o
However when it comes to taking him out for walks (in my arms) he barks like mad at every dog. We have taken him out every day since he has been home. to the local park, walking passed the school at home time, He is fine with people and is getting less nervous with car noises, bin lorries and such. But as soon as he spots a dog big or small he starts barking and wont stop long enough for me to give him a treat for being quite, he only stops when either the dog owner or we have walked away!! I dont know what to do, does any one have any suggestions?
He is booked in for puppy classes, but it doesnt start for another two weeks.

He could be trying to say hello to the other dogs, Chilli is the same when he is on the lead. One bit of advice we were given for excessive barking was to get a treat into their mouths so they couldn't actually bark and then as they were chewing say good quiet, this worked well for Chilli.

Another way is to start praising and giving treats earlier - before he has started barking. The second you see a dog - even if he hasn't seen it start telling him he is being good for being quiet and giving the treats. This works on ChillPepp's suggestion as then with a mouth full of treats he can't bark and it won't be long before he has realised that he should be quiet when he sees other dogs.
Cara and Mo, two black mini's and Molly a black & white Heinz 57 all served by Elaine, the cook, poop picker, and chief toy thrower.

Yet more good tips! Ludo is 16 weeks old now and apart from the odd bit of lead biting(a light chain lead has been a godsend there!) barking at other dogs, and the occasional human are our only issues now, hope those tips work for you and Colton too!

We went out for our walk and I started giving him treats and saying quiet, good boy
he was so busy eating the treats he didnt notice the first dog, but did bark a little bit at the second and third, its been a huge difference already woohoo
