New puppy kit?

Post by Salomon »

Gaspard (salt and pepper standard) will come home the first week of August and i need to get everything ready in advance. We will be going to UK and then picking him up en route home.
I intend to get most of his "kit" in the UK as its easier. Here we dont have massive pet stores and a lt of stuff just doesnt exist eg kongs and crates ! Not one dog forum, magazine or book in French has any mention of crating . And according to the breeder there are only 250 standards born in France each year which probably explains why no one has ever heard of them.
So, there are a couple of things i would like some pointers on, like grooming stuff for puppies and any other items that may be obvious to you experts ... But novices like me just wouldn't dream of !

Merci

Hi - Great to hear you are getting a new pup. We have only had minis so hopefully one of the Forum members with standards will be able to offer more relevant advice but I would say that as well as the crate and Kong - plenty of chewing toys - you cannot have too many :)

Our puppies and adult schnauzers all love the deer antlers :

You might want to get some puppy pads tp help with house training:

http://www.petsathome.com/shop/puppy-tr ... home-57518" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and for grooming you may be able to get a basic kit from a pet store or online:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mikki-Grooming- ... B001BBFP0W" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Are you going to hand strip. You can check out the grooming section of the Forum for lots of useful advice. If you are you will need a stripping stone for taking out the puppy fluff. You can get these from many pet (or equine) supplies and grooming stores in the UK or online:

http://www.groomers-online.com/product. ... dark-coats" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

also a stripping knife - there are many different kinds and you may want to look out one that suits you best:

http://www.groomers-online.com/product. ... ife---fine" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

you don't need to spend a fortune on these to get one that will be OK.

A good comb and a slicker brush for the beard and furnishings are also useful and a good set of scissors. Basically you will need the same equipment for the puppy you would need for the adult but not so large.

If you are going to clipper your dog then you will need to look at a good set of clippers and blades. Grooming really needs to start very soon after you get your pup and they need to get used to it. I hope this has helped and I am sure there will be other members who can add more to this from experience of standard schnauzers. :)

Thanks so much for this. Just to know that the grooming stuff is the same but smaller is terribly useful !
I have found that zooplus also have a french website so i can get deliveries of most of the things. I think its the grooming that scares me the most...we will have to do it ourselves and i dont want the poor dog to have a bad haircut ! I think clipping will be easier as no intention of showing him. TOH thinks he will use the same clippers on on himself and the dog ! I have put a stop to that idea already. Mind you, in French the word for clippers and lawnmower are the same :-?
Cant wait til August. Very excited .

Don't get puppy sized grooming stuff or it will be of no use in a couple of months!! That said you don't need puppy sized anything, my minis happily play with giant schnauzer sized toys!

Don't forget a collar and lead, name tag (with address and your phone number)

Bedding

Bowls (food and water)

Food (more of whatever the breeder is feeding)

I don't know if Laurence still comes onto the forum but she breeds standard schnauzers in france, so may be able to help you with other things and where to get them from in france
