Reading recommendations please!

Post by Joosy »

Hi! We're hoping to get a mini schnauzer next year, in the research phase at the moment.
Can anyone recommend some good books to get us prepared for owning a dog?
Something for me and my husband and something for our kids to read too, aimed at 5+ years.
Thanks!
Ps it doesn't have to be breed specific
Proud new owners of Cookie, the B/S mini!

I recommend the Gwen Bailey book 'Perfect Puppy' or Dr Ian Dunbar's 'Before and After you get your Puppy' to all my puppy owners and the feedback from both is that they both have been very helpful. Two, that live in the same town as me, have used the Ian Dunbar book to bring up their puppies and I have to say the result with all their hard work (and dog training )is a credit to them .

I'm seriously impressed that you're doing your research well in advance :-) Wish I'd been that smart before I got Little Bear!

The Gwen Bailey book is good, not read the Dunbar one but he's great so I'm sure it would be good too.

I'd add to that 'For the Love of a Dog' by Patricia McConnell (my ultimate favourite of all time), 'Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson and 'Bonding with Your Dog' by Victoria Shale, oh and 'Inside of a Dog' by Alexandra Horowitz if you're looking to understand dogs and not just how to train them.

The ones listed are all really readable and from my point of view at least, helped enormously in my ongoing quest to figure out how my dogs think.

P.S I did a top ten on my blog last year which may be helpful http://thelittlebeardogblog.wordpress.c ... dog-books/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Happy reading :-)
