Sasha - 1st Schnauzer cut

Post by mikegoodson1 »

Sasha had her first Schnauzer cut today at the dog groomers - she no longer looks like a fluffy puppy but now a grown-up girl.

I think she is really pleased with her new look (if that's possible) - she has certainly enjoyed checking out her new 'do' in the mirror :)

*The elephant and lion in the pics are Sasha's toys ;)

I like that look I want to have Suzi done like that her eyebrows seem to irritate her eyes so it would be bettter to have them up out of the way.

That is why we have it done - Oscar suffers terribly in Spring/Summer with eye infections and so we ask for his eyebrows to be taken off his eyes and so it made sense to have Sasha's done the same :D

Aw she looks great Mike. Very happy with herself in the second photo.

I'm still persevering with the hand stripping.

Ohhh she looks amazing!!! :)

I have a question. Harriet's groomer is also her breeder and we took her to the groomer for the first time a couple of weeks ago and she looks great, but I saw Harriet's father and other older schnauzers have a very long beard and I don't like too much. When she's older, can I ask the groomer to leave a short beard or the long beard is something they need to have? Is it something merely esthetic?

I'm no expert but I love the Schnauzer beard and every time I take my MS boy Oscar (two years old) to the groomer, I say "don't touch his beard" - I don't mind them shaping it a bit but I don't want it shortened, I'm hoping it will grow nice and long - I have seen some fabulous pictures on this forum of MS with cracking beards.

On the other hand, for Sasha, I think my wife will fight me all the way to allow Sasha to have a beard, I suspect it will be kept short :(

Annie, beard length is purely aesthetic although a shorter beard is much easier to clean of course and doesn't get matted so if you are not in to grooming daily and cleaning very regularly you are probably better having it cut shorter than the breed standard which is to have a fairly long beard as you can see with all show dogs - no short beards at any shows. I love the long beard although it will get trimmed and shaped when it is too long, it is an effort to keep nice and clean but I think it gives the dog such character and a schnauzer isn't a schnauzer without a beard but that's just my opinion.... :) Do what you think is right for you and your best friend.

we also need a schnauzer.

Gosh she's grown up so fast.i love her colour and expression.
I've tried the short beard once on Robin, but it started to fly...now I keep it trimmed on the tips and run a stripping knife through it to take out dead hair.
I find the furnishing grow fairly fast so you can experiment and see what suits your dog ,which is good.

Thank you Jo, Julie and Mike!! Well, for now, as she is a puppy will keep the short beard for a while and then decide, but as Jo said, it's good to experiment and see what suits her at the end ;)

Sorry for the delay in replying, we have been away :)

Sasha is now 6 months old, she was born on 23.09.17 and she is still a real minx, a lovely character.

re beard length I love Hamish to have his full beard and long eyebrows it is him and he would look odd any other way. Did look odd when I trimmed it a bit short. Suzi's beard well she may suit it short it was one of her appealing puppy looks that and short eyebrows which might be a permanent look as they seem to irritate her eyes.

That is why although Chip has eyebrows l cut under them and
also the eye lashes. It is the hair underneath the brows which is
the problem, and not the brows themselves as they are far from
the eyes and are cut so that he can see underneath them. ??
