Hi all
I just have a very quick question about weight.
Monty is doing well and is currently enjoying Wainwrights grain free lamb and veg trays. He is eating a tray a day over 3 meals (3 x 130g) His weight at 6 months was 7.5kg. I weighed him last week and he was 7.6kg. Today he is still 7.6kg. Thats just 100g weight increase in around 6 weeks. I think he's 13.5 inches to the shoulder - he doesn't stand still enough to measure super accurately. He looks good, not underweight, but he is a wee little man. I can feel his ribs but not see them, and he has a waist. Is it normal for his weight to stagnate at 7/8 months. We thought he might fill out a little or at least put weight on albeit a little slower.
We have moved from puppy kibble to these adult wet trays as he had some tummy issues. These suit him fine (the packaging says it's ok for puppies over 6 months to have them), but maybe we need to increase the feeding amount or should we go back to puppy food? Monty would eat everything you put in front of him. He's so food motivated, there is no way we can allow him to dictate food amounts! He's active, loving his walks and runs/games in the park.
Any advice much appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Weight Stalling
Sounds like he is a great size and shape for his age. I dropped to 2 meals a day when Otto reached 6 months on the advice of his breeder and like you changed to adult food. The puppy food has a higher calorific content because pups are growing. Sounds good that his weight is steady after the switch, I think it has been said often to go on size and shape of your schnauzer rather than weight. If a little underweight then give a little more. I think during adolescence dogs naturally fill out a little but with a lively little one and un-neutered with a fast metabolism, it might take a while to build muscle etc. Doesn't sound like you have to worry about any Em.

Re: Weight Stalling
I know all Schnauzers are different in terms of shape/size/weight but just to mention that Sasha at 7 months old, weighed 7.7kg - she is the smaller of my two and in my opinion better sized than Oscar. Who bless him, is a little 'stocky' and I'm working on that to reduce it of course, so he is less 'stocky'

Re: Weight Stalling
Thanks both.
I think it's the stagnation that got me worrying a tad. But I definitely feel reassured now. So thank you both! I'll just keep weighing him weekly and monitoring.
We still feed Monty three times a day (7:30, 12:30 and 18:00) but I'm thinking whether or not to change to twice a day. Feeding grain free wet trays, it's difficult to get my head around him eating nearly 200g in one portion when 130g seems a lot. It's already quite a shift from kibble that he was first on. This looked very tiny in comparison! Is feeding twice a day better for their tums or does it not really matter? My common sense brain says it might rest Monty's digestive system but I don't want to overload it with too much in one go.

Re: Weight Stalling
The difference between the quantity is very much down to the fact that the kibble was so dehydrated and the wet food has a much higher quantity of moisture. If you rehydrated the amount of kibble Monty used to have it would look considerably more than it did when dry.
Unless Monty has any ill effects from eating his daily allowance over 2 meals instead of 3, there shouldn't be a problem cutting back to just twice a day and it does mean that you are not tied to trying to fit in an extra meal during the day if you are ever out and about - with or without him. However, if he doesn't cope well with the increased amount in 2 meals (upset tummy / vomiting ...) then just stay with three meals. There is not really any particular problem with him having smaller meals, especially at under a year old. Most people do find it more convenient for dogs to just eat twice a day and, as an adult dog can eat quite quickly, a more substantial meal morning and evening may suit them better too
