Itchy Lily-help please

Post by lewinky »

My 9 year old mini is very itchy.
She is flead and wormed and there is no sign of what might be causing her constant itching and scratching. It seems to be all over, feet, tummy, and legs.
I took her to the vet last week and she was given a steroid injection which stopped the itching for a few days but now it's back.
I and she would really appreciate and help.

Did your vet recommend Malaseb shampoo? I have heard that it is very good for irritated skin.
Man cannot survive with wine alone...
we also need a schnauzer.

At this time of year field mites can be a problem...the dogs go in long grass and bring the mites home..the mites themselves don't feed on the dog but their larvae do burrow into the skin and cause itching...
We use frontline combo and put a white sheet on the dogs' bed to see what comes off the dogs...usually there are pepper like specks on the sheet which show the meds are working.
Have a look at your flea treatment to see if it covers mites( acaridae).

The maleseb shampoo is a good idea as it will cover yeast and bacterial infections..

If the itching continues I'd want the vet to do a skin scrape/ culture...to see if the dog has mites, yeast or bacterial infection...
The steroid injection is not going to get to the cause of the problem and is a temporary fix for the itch.

Hi
My dog has the same itchy problem. I am trying Piriton to see if that helps as it may
Be an allergy. This was suggested by my vet before going down the tests route.
I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all the replies. Most helpful.
I am going to try the recommended Malaseb shampoo.
My vet has also prescribed a course of Apoquel tablets which have stopped the itching but I'm very keen to stop using them after reading the possible side effects.
Many thanks again.

Hi Lynn..has she always been an itchy dog or is this new this year?
I would stress you need to get a skin scrape test done to actually diagnose or eliminate yeast, bacteria and mites etc....
If she were mine I'd go to a vet skin specialist and get a diagnosis before going in for a drug as powerful as apoquel,or steroids...they only mask the symptoms but you needt treat the cause and obviously you need to get her a diagnosis first.

What diet is she on..have you got her on a no grain diet? If not start there..
does she have red staining near her eyes, does she chew her paws???both are classic sign of an allergy..

Pippa is 8 and has exactly as you describe. Our vet has said it is a problem many schnauzers have. She has had the injections, tablets, we use the shampoo and feed her on Arden Grange sensitive (which has helped tremendously. She still has occasional flare ups (whatever the season) and has a week back on the tabs. Our vet has advised of the side effects, it can shorten their life, but explained you need to weigh up the quality of life against that negative. They can do tests and may be able to find an injection that is bespoke to the mini but i'm not sure i want to put her through this as she is a very well and bright little girl with what regime we currently follow.
