DBARC Dog of Courage 2015

Whisp won the Dog of Courage award and then the Best in Show at DBARC Fun Day. Thank you DBARC, this means so much to us.
We are very proud of this little dog, who richly deserves this honour. Some of you know her story. Rescued by Many Tears and fostered by the wonderful Janet at DBARC. Cataracts in both eyes, almost bald due to mange, a womb infection and mentally shut down. This was how Whisp came into foster. DBARC paid for her to have a cataract removed from one eye, but the other eye was inoperable. Janet put Whisp back together. She healed her physically and mentally and after several months, we were allowed to adopt her. Whisp settled well, but two years later she had to have the good eye removed due to glaucoma and she was found to have low thyroid levels. She managed well with her remaining eye and apparently was able to see shadows, light and dark. Then about eighteen months ago she developed glaucoma again. We spent a year with Rowe vets, Bristol, trying to reduce the pressure in her eye and save what little sight she had, but in February we lost the fight and her second eye was removed.
Whisp was lost and depressed for about three months. It was very hard for her to cope with this total loss of sight. However, we persevered and Whisp is happy again! She enjoys her walks over the fields, she finds her way around the house and comes to the kitchen and barks for her meals, as she used to. She comes away in the motorcaravan and enjoys the change. She meets people and dogs with no fear.
We entered her in the Dog of Courage class, because she has gone through so much and come out the other side. A happy little dog. I feel that this award is not only hers, but belongs to all those ex-breeding dogs who have suffered so much. Thank you Janet for what you did for Whisp and are still doing for little dogs like her.

That's made me teary, such a special girl and award. The courage these dogs show to get on with whatever is thrown at them is really testament to the amazing nature of dogs.
Will share Whisp's award and this post on Susie-Belle's Facebook page so others can see the journeys some breeding dogs travel.

Congratulations Catherine and your very special girl Whisp :x

Whisp has been through so much and is such a brave girl who is clearly still enjoying her life. She has a lovely family who have loved and cared for her throughout.

I love the ex-breeders, they are all so special and have all suffered so much before and often after being rescued. But they all seem to soldier on regardless, they are truly inspirational little dogs.

I was there watching Whisp get her award :D

All the dogs in the class would have been worthy winners, with different, amazing, stories and I would not have wanted the responsibility of judging ;)

That said, Donna picked the right one ;;)
