Albert Claude & Cerise

Post by BeeBee »

I'm not sure whether I'd introduced Cerise to the forum before I took a break, but in case not here she is along with her brother Albert Claude who I know I haven't introduced as he joined us in February this year.

Cerise is around 8 or 9, we adopted her in December 2015, a few weeks after losing Susie-Belle. She spent years in a puppy farm as a breeding dog and still suffers many psychological problems, deep seated anxiety is a broad term, she has a lot of worries on her mind does our Cerise. But, she makes a little progress every week, sometimes it lasts, other times she slips backwards.

Albert Claude was born in a Northern Irish puppy farm which was exposed for its terrible practices and living conditions for the dogs in a BBC Panorama documentary in 2016 - Britain's Puppy Dealers Exposed. It clearly didn't harm business, he is still trading, legally, licensed for vast numbers of dogs (his licensing authority refused to confirm how many even under a Freedom of Information request, but last known figures were in excess of 120 adult dogs, which means a lot more on site with all the puppies being produced).
Albert Claude had a lucky escape, he was sold to a dealer, transported to England, and sat unsold in a pet shop for 2 months before being bought for £650. He was then, the very next day taken to a rescue centre as the elderly resident bulldog and the young puppy didn't get along - or get a chance to after 24 hours.
Albert's life could have been very different indeed if he had been kept as a stud by that puppy farmer. Instead of which, he now spends his days having fun in France, without a care in the world. As it should always be for dogs.

I'm under no illusions that he may develop problems in life due to his bad background, but then again, he may not. We live day by day, enjoying the time we all have together.

Here they both are out on the hill near the house with their sister Renae.

Hi Janetta,

I hope you don't mind but for anyone who is interested in this; here's a little more about the breeder and more background on Albert-Claude.

The bit that I don't understand about this particular breeder is that he shows Beagles and registers them with the KC yet they won't get involved with someone who is registered for over 120 breeding bitches. It really is obscene.

This does highlight the fact that (aside from the Assured Breeder Scheme) Kennel Club registration is simply a registration of births of puppies that are recorded as coming from a line of pedigree dogs and where minimal requirements regarding relationship / age / number of litters are expected but are reliant on the honesty of the breeder!

However, as, nowadays there is such a proliferation of "designer" crossbreeds which cannot be KC registered, KC registration is becoming pretty redundant anyway where the general populace are concerned. What I find so frustrating is the total lack of concern about the legal licensing of breeding facilities of this size and that no-one with influence in the sphere of animal welfare including every single one of the big name animal charities did not seize the opportunity offered by the introduction of the new Animal Welfare Act in 2016 to campaign and support a maximum number of breeding bitches and litters allowed to a breeder or a particular facility. Had it been stated, as is the case, that it is impossible to raise puppies as they should be raised and care for breeding dogs with the highest standards of welfare, the law might have been changed to deny any commercial breeding facility a licence and close down all those that exceeded an acceptably low limit (even 10 breeding bitches is too many to my mind, never mind 100+). Instead the charities claimed the size of a breeding facility had no adverse impact on the puppies and the opportunity was lost!

Laws may not wipe out poor breeding practice but could go some way to stopping the large scale puppy farmers having any "licence" for their horrific businesses alongside a substantial change in the penalties for those who abuse animals. Current penalties are meaningless as deterrent, punishment or to protect animals from future abuse by the same criminals.

I don't mind at all. The KC are rubbish. They profit from puppy farming quite simply and know full well that the general public believe KC reg means more than the fact they have just taken money from people registering litters, many of which are known puppy farmers. It's an infuriating world.
