Not to do with schnauzers but my mums having problems ....
with her two jrt x chi's. Both males and fighting ALOT, even when we split them up they are still want to kill each other. Both were neutered yesterday in a hope it will help a little, but mum's getting worried now about them hurting each other so any advice would be much appreciated. One is 18 months the other is 14 months. The older one she had from a pup the 2nd one was given to her from a friend as she didnt have enough time for him. I dont think he was well socialised and is not good with strangers or strange dogs.

probably best to rehome one.

Ditto what Jo said. A friend had this with her dogs, one westie the other American bulldog. The am bull went from being a right softie to realising his own strength in a matter of months and then he started turning that aggression on my friend. He was PTS. Keep them separated and rehome one to give them both a chance before the decision is taken out of your mums hands.
Cara and Mo, two black mini's and Molly a black & white Heinz 57 all served by Elaine, the cook, poop picker, and chief toy thrower.

Agree with the other posts. My sister had two bitches one jrt other yorkie x. The fighting got so bad she actually got bit when she had to seperate them during a particularly bad fight in the end she decided to rehome the jrt as she was the calmer of the two. The yorkie she kept as she is okay with my sister but with any one else she is an ankle biter.

not looking good then..... only just had them neutered though so we're hoping in a couple of weeks it calms things. We're lucky that they are both tiny as any bigger as in the case with the american bulldog it would be uncontrollable.
they are both such lovely dogs and 99% of the time are best friends, literally most of the time they have their fights half an hour later they are in the same bed kissing each other!!

Re: Not to do with schnauzers but my mums having problems ....
They're getting to the age where they're sorting out their place in the 'pack' - it is a phase that all young dogs go to to some extent.
Whats important to do is make sure that the dogs now your MUM is the pack leader, and they mightn't fight so hard to establish places.
Play fighting is a way of working it all out, but if it does get nasty, some water flung over them doesn't do any harm - then it's time for some 'time out' and calm down.
If they're usually best of friends, then it really is just working out pecking order.
Neutering should make a difference, just tell your mum to be firm with them, and make sure they know she's in charge.

thankyou daisy's mum! ... We have spoken to a behaviourist and thats one of the things that she suggested is that it is some sort of power struggle, my mum needs to learn how to be firm with them though !

Re: Not to do with schnauzers but my mums having problems ....
It's a natural thing for dogs to do, if there is no clear leadership in the pack system, they will inevitably settle it themselves.
We've got 6 dogs at my mums, all completle bar one, and the only fights are when the whippet gets a bit full on with the collie bitch, the rest of the time they're happy as larry, because they know my mum is pack leader, though Bella is defiantely her second in command
Once you understand that dogs need a leader, especially if there is more than one dog, then you will be able to understand why they fight a bit more, of course, it's not always as clear cut as that but a well trained dog is a happy dog, because it knows it's place and that's how they like it
The boys are still young yet, but they're not getting younger, and the longer they fight it out, the less attention they'll pay to your mother, especially if they work out one fof them should be in charge - she'll very quickly have two naughty adolescent dogs with no clear guidance on her hands.
It's easily resolved (well, ....sort of).

Re: Not to do with schnauzers but my mums having problems ....
This problem is probably heightened by the fact the pecking order is not a natural occurance. All of my dogs which come in from a pup file in at the bottom and go from there, Nancy the cocker who camne in at 16 months is still struggling and has heirachy issues particurly with Ava, to the point Nancy has been living in the kitchen whilst i have been seeking help to deal with this the right way not just how i think is best so both dogs havent had to work out who is top dog as they were only dogs until the second one arrived and that probably where the issues are arising but be vigilant because terriers are buggers when they go-i mean nancy my cockers was bad enough last saturday (and yes i got bitten although not badly)

Any news on how your mum is getting on with these two?
