Schnauzer name and type Statistics
Apologies if this is already available, but wondered if you are able to pull data from the names/type of dogs which people type in on the user account screens.
It would probably make for interesting reading seeing the total number of Schnauzers by colouring/type/breed as well as things like most common/most unusual names for each breed.
What do you think?

Re: Schnauzer name and type Statistics
I think what is meant is to get a digest of dog names, sizes and colours from the info to the right of each post.
Dean would be the person to ask.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant!Donald wrote:I think what is meant is to get a digest of dog names, sizes and colours from the info to the right of each post.
Dean would be the person to ask.
Eg:
Most/least common names (list of names)
Most/least common colours
Most/least common breeds
Total/average schnauzers per person
(And a mix of all the above, e.g. Most common Mini Schnauzer colour)
Things like that.
Seems a shame to have all this extra info and do nothing with it! I'd be pleased to help!

I've no idea how much work this will create for Dean.
But I'd like to see this too.
But not if it's a huge load of work.

Re: Schnauzer name and type Statistics
Now I know why my ears have been ringing all day
Finding out the size of dog, sex, colour, etc is pretty straight forward. Not something that would be able to be done by everyone on the forum, but I would need to write a query to the database that will return the numbers. Getting this info is straight forward as there are only a few options and counting them is fairly easy.
The names of dogs is something totally different. Because it is a free form field as in anyone can put anything in there, there is no way of doing a straight forward count. You would also have to take variations into account, such as Monty and Montie.
I'll spend a few minutes on it and see what I come up with but I make no promises as my time is limited at the moment.

No worries Dean - well done for looking into this! As you can probably tell from the creation of this post, I like facts and figures and regularly pull stats/write queries for work. If you could anonymise the info, as mentioned before, I'd be happy to help. But this is v low priority request so please don't go to any trouble. Was just intrigued!
Oh, and I completely understand about free-text fields. The curse of analysts everywhere!

Re: Schnauzer name and type Statistics
Just from being around the forum a lot I would say the most common name is Monty, there are at least two Watsons, and only one Rodders

Here is something. I've not formatted it or anything. It's basically raw.

Re: Schnauzer name and type Statistics
A quick calculation based on Deans figures gives us;
Mini's 321
Standards 36
Giants 35
Bitches 186
Dogs 206
That doesn't include the figures for White Mini Dog as they totaled at 1906, so I'm guessing that includes all those who haven't entered a breed for their dog.
As for splitting it by colour and size we have;
White Mini Dog 1906
White Mini B 4
P&S Mini 220
B&S Mini 48
Black Mini 49
P&S Std 17
B&S Std 1
Black Std 18
P&S Giant 1
Black Giant 34
So P&S mini's are by far the most popular. No one has a B&S Giant. I'd love to see the photo of the B&S Standard someone says they have, I didn't think you could get those!

Cara and Mo, two black mini's and Molly a black & white Heinz 57 all served by Elaine, the cook, poop picker, and chief toy thrower.

Re: Schnauzer name and type Statistics
Good start guys! Is it wrong that this sort of stuff excites me? Ha!
Well done on getting this info so quickly!
Interesting to see the split in breeds/colours. Is this what people expected?
And the 'white mini dog' scenario is one I often come across. i.e. are there really that many dogs of that type, or is this a data collection issue? I'd agree with Elaine in that it seems as if there is something not quite right there. But even at this level it's interesting to see the splits.
I have all sorts of combinations and permutations of ideas floating around:
- does the colour/breed of the dog make it any more less likely to have a name beginning with a certain letter ?
- % of dogs with names similar to their owners
- Is a male more likely to own a dog or a bitch?
- Are some colours more popular as years go on?
- average posts per user based on dog type
Maybe I'm getting carried away now! )
