Why won't dominance die?

Post by Mike Jackson »

I came across an interesting article linked on FB today.

Not read through them yet but there looks to be some other interesting articles as well.

Interesting. I was reading something the other day about not letting your dog stop and sniff when he's on the lead because you have to be the pack leader. I remember doubting extremely that a wolf pack leader would really spent her time monitoring and controlling when and where the other wolves get to sniff! The taking control of every part of a dog's life that is sometimes recommended is nothing at all like the fluid and basically practical interactions between any group of wild mammals, even when they are hierarchial.

(Having said that, I had to dash into town with Kili this morning for an emergency deadline- we had 45 minutes for a 3 mile walk and he didn't get to sniff much along the way! But he can tell when I'm in a hurry and he adapts, which I think is most of what dog-person interaction is like. We meandered back through the parks at his pace off lead :-) )
