Lovely videos. To all that were there, was that Jackie Hoods new boy in the Grooming Mayhem video, very very nice ;)

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
Actually it is not all breeds that are affected by the vet checks at shows although any dog could I believe be referred to a vet if there was thought to be a serious problem on the day. The vet checks have been introduced primarily for 14 'high profile' breeds which were considered by the Kennel Club to be the ones about which the greatest health concerns had been raised. These are the following: Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Bulldog, Clumber Spaniel, Chow Chow, Dogue De Bordeaux, French Bulldog, German Shepherd Dog, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese, Pug, Shar-Pei, St. Bernard.Dawnspell wrote:I am right in thinking that even if they win a class they then still have to be examined by a vet who has an expertise in the breed. If in the case of say a bulldog the vet thinks there are problems with the breathing they can take away the win as this would be against improving the breed standard ?
Even with these it will not be the class winners who are checked but the Best of Breed winners who must be passed to be fit by a vet before being allowed to proceed to compete in the Group judging. Any dog from these breeds who is eligible to claim Champion status also is required to be vet checked before the title is confirmed. This is at general and group Championship shows only. Judges should be judging that all dogs placed are fit and healthy and should not be selecting winners or placing dogs where there is any obvious problem with movement, breathing, eyes, jaws etc even if these are due to a temporary condition on the day. The full details of what is involved in the vet checks and why these breeds were selected can be found here:

If all you needed to do was turn up on the day I think many more of us may choose to showBeeBee wrote:I dont follow the show world, so forgive my ignorance and am only following this as it involves the very lovely Creggan's brother but, am I right in thinking that as only 2 are in the results in Maverick's group, all he had to do was turn up and he'd have got a prize? Or, the two that are there, could have both not been awarded a prize and therefore that group would not have had any winners? same for all the groups where the entries are low? And please don't take my question as questioning Maverick's a worthy winner
There is an awful lot more to it than that ;) Although most of these dogs are also pets they get trained very differently to our dogs - for example one thing I have picked up from following Robert is that they are taught not to sit for a treat as you don't want them sitting in the ring. They have far more regular baths and grooming than most normal dogs too.
I love to see them in show trim and to have some idea of what I am aiming for Don't think I will ever get there though

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
May I ask one final question as this thread has been derailed a bit?
Do you know how many other dogs are entered in to the class before you go and who they are? I know that you won't know how many will actually turn up on the day until you get there though.

Re: Driffield Show Mini's
It's a great achievement Robert well done. Placing above another dog at a show is something to be proud of especially when it's by getting first place.
Kate, two weeks before a show, a summary of entries is published. This lists how many dogs are entered in each breed, but we have no idea how those dogs a distributed amongst the classes or how many dogs and bitches are entered! Claire is right, winning the reserve challenge certificate qualifies Louis for entry in the studbook, qualifying him for Crufts for life.
Thank you all for your kind words, Louis was a super start yesterday
