Absolutely horrific :-o

Considering how many puppies are already being bred in appalling conditions here in the UK, bringing in more from overseas is unbelievable. Apparently changes are going to be made to the Pet Passport travel scheme by the end of this year to try and address some of the problems of the thousands of these poor animals being brought in but it seems a bit half hearted.

I do agree though with the statement in the Dog World article that puppy buyers do have to be responsible in their approach to purchasing a puppy and starve the trade of business. If everyone sourced their puppies responsibly these dealers and traders in the misery of dogs would have no market. Laws will always be evaded by experienced and hardened criminals but in this kind of business they are still confident they can find people willing to buy and so the trade continues. It is so important to constantly remind people looking for a puppy to do their research before they buy and never purchase dogs being sold through pet shops, online sites such as Gumtree or the small ads in papers or shop windows.

This is one reason that changes to the law that the PupAid campaign - the banning of 3rd party sales of puppies & kittens - are so important.
Unfortunately, the noises out of DEFRA so far aren't all that encouraging as far as I see, but the debate in parliament has yet to take place, but more reason yet again here to lobby our MPs....and keep telling people about bad breeding practices. I will never make apologies for keeping on about it, even though people may not want to hear it.
