Heartbroken

Saying goodbye to our Schnauzers is the hardest part. Share your memories here as we bid farewell to our beloved friends. They've crossed the bridge and returned to the meadow in full health and free of injuries. Running free. We won't forget.

Heartbroken

Post by Schnauzer_Lady »

We lost our Darlee Belle suddenly and unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 4. She had a litter of 5 puppies, age 4 weeks. I blame another dog, a female who turned extremely hostile when Darlee's puppies were born and would attack Darlee whenever I took her out of the crate to potty. I had to drag her out, she refused to leave her puppies for the 2 weeks it took me to rehome the problem dog. After that she had no problem leaving the puppies for normal intervals. But apparently the damage had been done - Darlee went into severe eclampsia on Friday afternoon. My vet was unreachable, most likely in surgery given the day. So I rushed her an hour away to my go-to emergency vet. I had called to let them know. When we arrived I was told to take a seat in the empty waiting room and the Dr. would be with me shortly. . . 2 hours later they moved me to the empty exam room because people were coming in after work to pick up dogs or medications and by then Darlee had worsened to the point that I knew she was dying and I was crying uncontrollably. I guess I was upsetting people. . . A dog had been carried in and was rushed to the back about an hour into our wait. Another 45 minutes later the Dr. finally came into the exam room, apologizing for "one emergency after another" since I had first called. She took her back and did what she could but it was too late; she passed away Saturday morning. I am in shock and can't stop crying. And I'm angry. . . all Darlee needed was IV calcium started and she was there before another dog requiring lengthy surgery came in. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, but I feel Darlee Belle didn't have to die. . .

How very very sad. You must feel really traumatised especially after trying so hard to get the help for Darlee Belle!
I feel so sorry for you and my thoughts are with you and Darlee Belle.

What a dreadful experience to go through.i hope the pups are ok and you all can recover from the loss of darlee.i would be following this up with the head of practice since you pre advised them of your dogs condition and estimated arrival time . You certainly should not have waited so long in an emergency vets.

I'm so very sad for you. I would certainly be writing a letter to the owner of the practice. and the local papers telling of the tragedy. People pay a lot for vets to treat their animals and if they know they will not be looked after they very soon find other vets. I hope the pups are ok and bring a little comfort to you at this sad time.
