Four Paws Puppy Farming Info

Post by BeeBee »

Here's a good article for anyone who knows nothing about where a large number of puppies being sold in the UK are coming from these days.
Please do your bit to improve things for dogs by doing nothing that supports the puppy farming industry. Don't be ignorant, there is no excuse for ignorance in an age of easy information. If you hear of anyone wanting a puppy, thinking of getting a puppy, get them to do some homework. It's not hard these days to find information, people choose to look at what they want, and this often involves turning a blind eye to uncomfortable truths. Turn them back and make them face it.

A good approach if people won't listen to their conscience is to mention the additional, likely vet costs of sourcing cheap puppies. The evidence is overwhelming that puppy farmed puppies, sadly are often sickly. They will have behavioural problems as the poor things have brain damage from the environmental stressors their mothers are subjected to, then they have the damage done in their developmental stages. Puppies in their thousands are being shipped across Europe at ages where they should still be with their mothers. Then sold cheaply to supply the demand that the buying public are creating. Endlessly.

As breeds get more popular, so puppy farmers/traders/dealers et al cash in. I feel depressed that minis are getting popular, I don't celebrate this at all as I know what it means for thousands and thousands of dogs around the world.

This article is a good thing to direct them to.

I do agree that with the huge amount of information around nowadays on all social media, TV and the press that it is hard to imagine anyone could be unaware of the problem but sadly while the thoughtful and caring puppy seekers will take this on board and try to do what they can to avoid buying from disreputable sources, there is a significant number of people who actually don't care.

What really distresses me is the utter selfishness and "it's all about me" attitude of those who impulse buy a puppy with no thought that it is a living feeling creature that is going to be reliant on its new family for love, care and real commitment to its welfare for the whole of its life. People who fail to take into account the type of dog they are buying such as those who get breeds who need huge amounts of exercise but live in a flat and work all day so the poor creature ends up obese, bored and with behavioural problems or those who buy a companion dog but have not the time, means or commitment to providing the love and companionship that type of dog thrives on. And then, when the dog becomes sick, destructive, noisy, attention-seeking etc etc it is always the dog that is to blame.

There are types of dog such as hounds and pastoral dogs that have been bred for particular characteristics such as hunting or herding and these characteristics need to be taken into account when looking for a dog. There are also breeds of dog that have particular traits common to dogs of that breed - these are NOT "good" or "bad" traits In the dog, they are breed characteristics and need to be understood as such by anyone purchasing a dog of a specific breed. All puppies of any breed or a mixture of many will need time, understanding, commitment to training and the financial means to provide the best home possible and, if someone does not have the means, the time, the commitment or whatever to provide that kind of home, they should not be adding a puppy ( or a dog in all likelihood ) to their household.

It cheers me when I receive an enquiry from a puppy seeker that is more like an exam paper of questions alongside a brief outline of their family, the home environment, their reasons for wanting a puppy and why they were interested in that breed. It is rare but it happened yesterday :-) Thank goodness there are still some people for whom the puppy is the priority and the intention to provide it with the best possible future rather than a self-centred impulse buying that continues to revolve around the buyer and their disappointment in the puppy which is not the little cute bundle of joy they expected it to be. The attitude should be " Are we the best family for this puppy?" And not "Let's have one of those puppies" with no research, no planning, no thought but their own pleasure and blame the puppy when it doesn't work out.

There was Panorama (I think) episode on recently about puppy farming and dealing - horrendous. I knew a lot about it, but not the tactic of borrowing a female of the same breed to dupe people into thinking the Mother is with the pups. It's a disgusting industry.

The puppy farming trade certainly is appalling and it is desperately sad that much of it is licensed and legal as with the breeding establishments on the Panorama programme. However, regarding attempts by unscrupulous and disreputable breeders and dealers to dupe puppy seekers by showing a stooge "mother" with the puppies in a house, this can be revealed for the fraud that it is if people are willing to do their research beforehand.

The best route for puppy seekers initially is to find a good breeder, before they actually have a litter of puppies, get to know about them and their dogs and get on a waiting list for a puppy. Dealers and puppy farmers operate continuously with puppies being sold through pet stores and online selling sites - they always have puppies available for a buyer.

Just because a puppy is raised in a home does not mean it has been bred with love and care so seeing a puppy ( and mother ) in a house is no guarantee of anything really when buying a puppy. Puppy seekers need to know details of the parents (temperament , health and that any relevant hereditary health tests have been carried out). In the case of mini and giant schnauzers, a puppy seeker will also need to know that the litter will be eye screened by a specialist vet before sale. They will want confirmation of what socialisation has been done with the puppies by the breeder and information on what they may need to be doing once they take home their new family member.

and Puppy Culture:

for an insight into the work done by the best breeders to raise puppies well

You will also want to know that the breeder is going to endorse the puppies registration documents against them being bred from or exported, that a Contract of Sale is being provided, that the puppies are microchipped in the name of the breeder as first keeper and full documentation provided re transfer of microchip details, transfer of KC registered ownership and all relevant health certificates.

Ask for the full KC registered name of the parent dogs beforehand so that you can check their details online via the Kennel Club - their pedigree, their inbreeding, their health tests etc:

It is only those puppy seekers who do not fully research what is needed when looking to introduce a puppy into their family, who buy on impulse, want a "cheap" puppy or are unwilling to wait or travel who are drawn into being duped by fraudsters. The information is out there for those who are prepared to look for it :-)

Thank you, that's very helpful information. I myself am hoping to be getting a miniature schnauzer puppy in 3-4 years time. I'm already (some would say slightly obsessively) doing research into breeders and researching the breed. I've been in contact with a couple of breeders and been looking at blogs and the champdogs webpages/links to see how those dogs are brought up and how involved the adult dogs are in daily life - we have young children and want our dog to be a part of the family, coming on regular outings, etc.
It's great to know exactly what to look for, thank you :)
