Help us find a family pet

Post by Chumbasmum »

Hi. We are in Gloucestershire and looking for a female miniature schnauzer. We have spent many years getting ready to make this commitment and now feel ready. I have looked at the KC site but not getting very far. Any help would be gratefully received.

Welcome to the Forum:-)

The best way to find a puppy is to find a good breeder, talk to them by phone, email or in person letting them know about your self, family, reasons for wanting a miniature schnauzer etc...and see if you can get your name on their waiting list for when they next have a litter.

The Kennel Club website has lists of Assured Breeders for miniature schnauzers in all different areas of the country. If you are looking for a reputable breeder, you may need to widen your search area beyond Gloucestershire and be willing to wait for a litter to be born.

It is also a good idea to join one or more of the Schnauzer breed clubs:
Miniature Schnauzer Club; Schnauzer Club of Great Britain; Northern Schnauzer Club as these hold at least a couple of shows a year as well as a Fun Day and give puppy seekers an opportunity to meet owners and breeders and the chance to find out who may have an upcoming litter and maybe recommendations or warnings as to which places to avoid!

You can use the Kennel Club "Find a Puppy" service which will let you know those breeders with litters born recently who have asked to be listed but many of the best breeders will have waiting lists from before pups are born so trying to find a good breeder and establish contact before they have a litter is definitely the best way forward.

Some people feel that if they are looking for a family pet they do not need to go to a breeder that shows, that registers their puppies at the Kennel Club or that is a member of the Assured Breeder Scheme. However, many dedicated small scale breeders who are passionate about the health and temperament of their dogs do show, even occasionally, and the majority of the puppies they breed will always be going to a pet home as a only a tiny minority of puppies are ever intended or going to make the grade in the show ring. A good breeder raises all their puppies to be fit, healthy and good temperament and that is exactly what you need for a family pet.

So, do contact breeders and have a chat with them, quiz them on things you need to know as regards eye testing, how often they breed, details of any planned litters and see if you can visit or meet at a schnauzer event even before they have puppies available:-)
