Daisy is declining

Looking after the health and welfare of your Schnauzer can be a full time job. You will find information on neutering, spaying, vaccinations, vet visits, upset tummies, Schnauzer bumps and much more here. Ask a question and someone will have had a similar experience. We also appreciate updates on how your Schnauzer is recuperating. A separate section is dedicated to our older Schnauzers.

Daisy is declining

Post by GaryThomlinson »

So poor Daisy’s health is starting to decline. She struggles to walk as her back legs are so weak, she’s also routinely defacating in the house first thing which may be related to the weakness in her back end. Walks around the streets or parks are now very slow and she sleeps large parts of the day. We’ve had to restrict her to her cage at night as her sleep patterns are all over the place and she will otherwise be scratching on the bedroom door or trying to get onto our bed several times a night.

When she came to us it was evident there was some sort of back end issue, whether spinal trauma or poor joints etc we never probed too far as she was coping ok.

She still attends hydrotherapy and is on meta cam as well as yumove supplements. Without them I think we’d have hit this issue long ago.

We think she’s possibly older than the original estimate, her teeth are falling out when she eats, she’s generally unsteady with poor hearing and eyesight now bless her.

It’s heartbreaking to see and we’re not sure what we’ll face next but she still has our full support and love.

Poor girl. It's the part of owning a dog I hate. Seeing them go downhill is very upsetting. Is Penny reacting at all to the situation?

Yes Penny grows increasingly intolerant of Daisy unfortunately.

So sorry to hear about Daisy. It is always heartbreaking when one of the family starts to go downhill with old age and ill health. It is so hard having to try and objectively judge their quality of life - one of the toughest decisions anyone has to face who loves their dogs.

So sorry to read your post about dear Daisy, a couple of dogs I know have aches and pains and on various medication but the cockapoo got a Bioflow Dog Collar before Christmas and it has made a huge difference to him and his movement is greatly improved.
And our neighbour has a lovely large docile staffie who is now 13, I told our neighbours about Milo the cockapoo and what an improvement the collar made to him without pills and they ordered one for Bailey and he is walking so much better now and not limping.
Worth having a look they are £24.95 with free delivery, if you google Bioflow Dog Collar it should take you to the Bioflow website

I've just read your post and I'm so sorry to hear about Daisys' decline, sometimes you have to make the hardest but kindest decision for your very best friend, it is tough, but I truly do think that a week too soon is better than a week to late. We all know you will do your very best for Daisy and we are sending you and Daisy lots of snuggles.

Thanks for all the kind notes.

During her short walk around the streets today her back legs went entirely, it was awful, she just fell from side to side, dragging her legs out behind her.

I quickly whipped her into my arms and walked home, with Penny going mental at a cat under a car, just to top it off.

Daisy is back on the sofa now with a large sigh and is snoozing. It looks like that dog pram thing is going to happen after all.
