CHICKEN

The Miniature Schnauzer is a smallest dog in the Schnauzer breed and originated in the mid-to-late 19th Century from Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and other smaller breeds such as the Poodle. A miniature Schnauzer is a spunky, but aloof dog who does things their own way. They tend to be good guard dogs without the tendency to bite.

CHICKEN

Post by 73chippy943 »

According to Dogs Nturally Magazine and higher sources,
CHICKEN is not good for our dogs !!!!
I believe this to stem from what the chickens are fed on,
and their deseased conditions ????

Any comments welcome, but our Chip nolonger has chicken
or dried food.He is fed on all natural foods which we order online.

I removed chicken from my threes diets a few years ago due to their allergies and it definitely made a big difference. It’s definitely known to cause problems and I think well worth removing if your dogs are having allergies/colitis type issues.

Like all things, it's where you get your food from. If you are feeding any kind of meat, where is it coming from? Do you know the source? Our two love the odd chicken wing on occasion and those chicken wings come from the same butcher, off the same chicken that I eat. The chicken will kill me before it kills one of the dogs.

You are confident about ordering natural foods online. Do you know what it is in those foods and where they are sourcing any meat and grain from? Is it organic or laced with pesticides and antibiotics. Some natural foods can be worse than dried food or chicken.

I offer my advice freely, but I am not an expert, breeder, groomer or behaviourist. It is simply my experience of raising pups in a way that seems to make sense.

Chicken is my favourite meat and I have been eating it a lot longer than my schnauzers. When we have a roast chicken Otto gets a good share of what is left and I try to go organic whenever I can as the rules are very strict with respect to feed/antibiotics etc.. Poor Oscar was allergic to fresh poultry so he never got to eat it. Just one small piece and he would get an inflamed intestine/colitis. Amongst my boy's diet of soil, beetles, grass, chipped bark and leaves, I think chicken is the least of my worries. ;)

I agree with Dean that a major problem with chicken is where it is sourced and how it is raised although it certainly is not easy nowadays to find chickens that are well reared. Some of the small businesses that specialise in raw food for dogs do look for organic, free range chicken meat for their stock and butchers selling meat for humans may also offer quality, carefully reared chicken too. Sadly most animals and poultry raised for meat of all kinds are fed on substandard growth enhancing grain based diets, live in enclosed stressful environments, are regularly dosed with antibiotics and anti-parasitic treatments and are slaughtered very young. Chickens whether for meat or eggs certainly suffer all the above in many farms and this will have an effect on those who eat them whether people or dogs.

There is an interesting article here on the issue of how chicken sold in shops may be labelled and what those labels really mean:
https://www.independent.co.uk/life-styl ... 51536.html

However, re dog food, it is still the question of sourcing that is important whether feeding raw or dry / tinned food. We currently feed our dogs a range of Paleo Ridge meats: kangaroo, lamb and beef tripe, duck, organic chicken, turkey, venison and beef tripe / heart. The wider the range of protein sources, the better it should be for the dog to avoid sensitivities or allergies developing from continually feeding a single type of meat.

Of course, if a dog does have a specific health issue that may limit the choice and if chicken does cause digestive issues it is best to avoid it altogether. Whatever you feed your dogs just make sure the quality is as high as you can afford :-)

one of my dogs became allergic to fish and chicken I now buy frozen food from Bella and Duke I can choose/exclude the proteins when I order I get a deliver once a month and it will be a mix of game, turkey, duck, lamb, beef, pheasant, venison and beef depending whats available. Both my vet and this company believe that feeding a single source protein can cause allergies to that protein. My wee welsh terrier has never looked so good she's 12.5 now, two years ago we contemplated putting her to sleep because she was so itchy she just ripped herself raw she scratched constantly so she looked like she was kick starting a bike . When she wasn't scratching she was nibbling her feet and legs. We had followed all the vets advice shampooed her daily with special shampoos it was a nightmare for about two years. I took her to a specialist skin vet and she said feed different game proteins and change the protein every week. This worked for my dog may not work for another dog

Jackie, that's great news. Do you think there is a difference in feeding a different protein every week rather than rotating proteins daily. Otto has either chicken, turkey or lamb, a different one each day.
