Growling

Post by Violet Turner »

Hi, Doris is a 5 month old Miniature Schnauzer that has some behavioural issues. ( My older dog had puppies – 4. )
At about 8 weeks all the puppies went to their new homes. But due to circumstances one was returned. We had this puppy for a week then he went to his new home.
Since he left Doris has turned in my eyes aggressive. Barking and growling at people even for a stage us, she would bark and growl at us. She was socialised and handled from birth so I don’t think it is that, but has anyone experienced this before? Or do you know of this happening before?
Thank you in advance :)

Hi Violet, how old was she when the pups left for the first time, how long was it before the pup was returned, how long was it back with you before being rehomed and how long ago did it leave?

I'm just trying to work out the timeline :)

I'm stupid Violet - Doris was one of the litter of 4!! Got it.

So it's now about 2 months since the dog left - maybe she just found the whole process unsettling. Puppies thrive with repetition, consistency and reward based training. I'd just keep working on the basis training commands with her and reward her good behaviour with periods of play.

If she shows signs of aggression I'd leave her in a playpen for 5 minutes and try again until she realises that aggression doesn't get your attention and that, more than anything else, is most of what mini schnauzers love, to be your constant companion.

Your not stupid, I confused you.
But what can I do when walking and she sees people? I have tried diversion with treats but doesn't seem to work.

I assume that she's on a short lead and not an extendable lead?

I'd a similar issue with Rosie; she was anxious and would bark at people out of fear. At first I took her to quiet areas and when I saw someone approach would shorten her lead and get her to sit to my side and allow the person to pass and reward her for not reacting. Through time she got the hang of that and I now take her for a walk through our town centre once a week so that she is used to seeing different people and realise that they are no threat to her. That said, she is still very reserved with strangers and I ensure that people don't try to stroke her as I don't fully trust her not to react.

Yes short lead. But some times we use the flexi lead. Thank you this is really helpful :)
